Job Description
DDA / Access Consultant – Junior to Senior – Building Regulation Consultancy n
Coming from architectural practice, I remember taking over a mixed-use residential project late in the process when things had started to go pear-shaped.
n
The architecture itself was strong. The problem was that accessibility had become a late‐stage compliance exercise rather than something considered as part of the design.
n
Adaptable apartments needed to be reconfigured, circulation was affected and elements of the design had to be revisited that could have been resolved much earlier.
n
It made me realise how valuable a good access consultant can be when they are involved early — working with the design team rather than simply telling them what they can't do.
n
That is the approach behind this opportunity.
n
I'm recruiting for a specialist leading built‐environment consultancy that works with architects, developers, engineers and builders on accessibility, compliance and certification across a broad range of Class 2 – 9 projects.
n
They are looking for an Access / DDA Consultant, with the opportunity suited to someone developing their career in the sector as well as an experienced consultant looking for their next move.
Could This Be You? n
If you've spent time producing and coordinating documentation, resolving design issues and working with consultants, you already have many of the skills needed to become a good access consultant.
n
You don't need to know every aspect of DDA consulting on day one. The technical knowledge around the NCC, DDA and AS **** suite can be developed with the support of experienced consultants.
Construction / Project Professional n
Your understanding of how buildings are actually delivered can be incredibly valuable in access consulting.
n
Experience in construction management, project management, design coordination or building consultancy means you already understand drawings, constructability, coordination and the realities of delivering a project.
n
This is an opportunity to take that experience into a specialist technical consulting discipline, without starting your career again from scratch.
Experienced DDA / Access Consultant n
If you're already working in DDA or access consulting, I'd also be interested in speaking with you.
n
You may be looking for greater responsibility, more involvement with design teams, exposure to more complex projects or simply a change from your current environment.
n
The role can be tailored around your existing technical knowledge, project experience and level of responsibility, with salary expectations adjusted accordingly.
What You'll Learn & Do: n
For someone developing their career in the sector, you'll work alongside experienced access consultants and build your technical knowledge across areas including:
n
Reviewing architectural drawings and documentation for accessibility requirements.
n
Learning to interpret and apply the NCC, DDA and AS **** suite.
n
Assisting with accessibility reports and technical advice.
n
Working directly with architects, engineers, builders and project teams.
n
Attending project meetings and site inspections.
n
Identifying potential accessibility issues early in the design process.
n
Helping develop practical solutions that work from both a compliance and construction perspective.
n
Taking on greater responsibility for projects as your knowledge and experience develops.
n
For experienced consultants, the level of responsibility will be aligned with your existing capability and project experience.
What They're Looking For: n
You don't need to know everything about DDA consulting on day one.
n
What you do need is:
n
A good understanding of how buildings are designed and delivered.
n
The ability to read and interpret architectural drawings.
n
Strong attention to detail.
n
An interest in accessibility, compliance and the built environment.
n
The ability to work confidently with architects, builders and other project professionals.
n
Relevant backgrounds could include:
n
n
Construction Management
n
Project Management
n
Design Coordination
n
Building Consultancy
n
DDA / Access Consulting
n
What's on Offer: n
Salary package commensurate with experience.
n
Hybrid working, combining office, project and site work.
n
Exposure to a broad range of complex Class 2–9 projects.
n
Mentoring and professional development.
n
A genuine pathway to develop as a specialist DDA / Access Consultant.
n
For experienced consultants, the opportunity to take on greater responsibility and influence.
n
A consultancy that believes accessibility should be considered as part of good design — not simply checked at the end.
About Me: n
I'm David Hamilton, Registered Architect (NSW Registration No. *****).
n
I've spent more than 15 years working in architectural practice before moving into recruitment across the architectural, specification, A&D; and broader built‐workplace sectors.
n
I know first‐hand how much difference good technical advice can make when it comes into a project early. That's one of the reasons I think this is an interesting opportunity for someone looking to move into access consulting — or for an experienced consultant looking for their next challenge.
n
If you're an architect, construction or project professional considering a move into DDA and access consulting, or you're already an experienced consultant looking for your next opportunity, I'd be happy to have a confidential conversation.
n
*All conversations handled with discretion.
