The Chance
n
Mission Data (MD) Division within ASD is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD's functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD's mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.

The Data Manager is responsible to perform complex data management and administration work of Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) data systems. They will exercise a considerable degree of independence and will perform a leadership function. They will maintain a well-developed understanding of ASD's mission and policy requirements and will exercise sound decision making and judgement in providing expert advice. They will be required to actively manage key stakeholder relationships and identify stakeholder expectations and concerns. They will develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.

The Data Manager will have in-depth knowledge of data management functions and will be responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and administration of complex projects that impact on operational outcomes. They will identify and advocate for initiatives to maintain and improve data quality, integrity and availability.

A Data Officer will use programming languages and tools in their day to day work to manage data and information. They will analyse information structures and ensure that data is appropriately stored and archived, in line with relevant compliance considerations.

Responsible for the development,



implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that function.

Engage in complex to very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for the Australian Signals Directorate.
n
Accountable to plan, lead and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes.
n
Manage one or more teams.
n
Develop and implement work plans, set performance indicators, and review individual, team and business performance, focusing on identifying opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement.
n
Ensure the work aligns with the strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.
n
Responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders' expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.
n
Accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development of their work area.

The key duties of the position include

Our ideal candidate can have industry experience, formal training or a particular domain expertise. You will have experience working with cloud technologies, with a focus on data management best-practices. Ideally, you will have demonstrated experience in data management through the use of programming languages and tools.
n
This position has people management responsibility and you will be required to exercise your people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team.

To be eligible for employment with ASD, you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

Australian Citizenship - Applicants must be an Australian citizen. Only in exceptional circumstances can this requirement be waivered.
n
Organisational Suitability Assessment – The preferred applicant will be required to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (see Organisational Assessment section).
n
Security Clearance - It is a condition of employment that applicants are willing and able to obtain and maintain the requisite security clearance for the duration of their employment with ASD.
n
Health Assessment - The preferred applicant may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the Agency's preferred medical provider.
n

Desirable Qualifications, Experience or Training

The following will be highly regarded:

Tertiary degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Math, Physics, STEM degree or related
n
Qualifications in data management and/or cloud technologies
n
Experience in technical delivery, in particular in a government setting
n
Experience in policy, standards and/or compliance work
n
Contributions to open source or academic literature.
