Business Development Manager - Manufacturing
Our client is looking for an experienced
Business Development Manager who knows how to find and win new business.
This is not a traditional account management role built around servicing an existing customer list. We are looking for someone who is comfortable
opening doors, starting conversations, walking customer sites, asking valuable questions and turning problems into commercial opportunities.
The role works across three complementary areas:
Laser
– sheet and tube laser cutting, folding, rolling, deburring and component processing
Engineering
– custom fabrication, installation, process equipment, stainless and carbon steel projects
Materials Handling
– imported conveying, bulk materials handling and engineered equipment solutions
Our clients' customers span food and beverage, defence, FMCG, infrastructure, construction, agriculture, transport, OEM manufacturing, engineering, fabrication and general industry throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The opportunity
You will take ownership of current business development across the group.
That means getting out into the market, identifying where customers are experiencing capacity constraints, production bottlenecks, supplier issues or upcoming projects, and working with our internal teams to turn those opportunities into profitable work.
You will be expected to:
Proactively identify and approach new customers and markets
Generate your own opportunities through calls, site visits, referrals, networking and research
Build and manage a genuine sales pipeline from first contact through to purchase order
Visit manufacturing facilities and understand what is happening on the floor
Ask the right questions to uncover production problems, upcoming projects and opportunities
Sell across laser cutting, fabrication and materials handling rather than operating within a single product line
Work closely with estimating,

engineering and operations to develop the right solution
Follow opportunities through and maintain momentum — not simply send a quote and wait
Develop strong relationships with engineers, production managers, maintenance teams, procurement and business owners
Bring useful market intelligence back into the business
Maintain accurate CRM activity, next actions and follow-up commitments
Who we are looking for
We are less interested in a polished sales script than we are in someone with
drive, curiosity and commercial instinct.
You will ideally have:
Proven experience
winning new B2B and B2C business
, not solely managing established accounts
Experience selling into manufacturing, engineering, fabrication, industrial services, capital equipment or a similar technical environment
Confidence making cold calls and approaching businesses where no existing relationship exists
The ability to walk into a manufacturing facility, ask intelligent questions and recognise potential opportunities
Enough technical aptitude to understand drawings, manufacturing processes and customer requirements
Strong questioning and listening skills
Commercial awareness and an understanding that the right work matters more than simply chasing revenue
The discipline to manage your own territory, pipeline, follow-ups and priorities
A high level of personal accountability — if you commit to a follow-up, it gets done
A current Australian driver's licence and willingness to travel throughout the region
A trade, engineering,

estimating or manufacturing background would be highly regarded, but
technical credibility, initiative and proven business development ability are more important than a particular qualification.
This role will suit you if...
You enjoy the hunt.
You are comfortable picking up the phone, introducing yourself to someone you have never spoken to and earning the right to continue the conversation.
You naturally research a business before approaching it.
You ask questions because you genuinely want to understand how the customer operates.
You see a factory, production line or engineering workshop and start noticing where things could be made easier, faster or more reliable.
You don't need to be constantly directed. You build a plan, execute it, measure what is working and adjust.
And once you find an opportunity,
you stay on it until there is a clear outcome.
If your sales experience has primarily involved servicing an inherited account base or responding to inbound enquiries, this is unlikely to be the right role.
What our client offers:
A senior business development position with genuine ownership of the market
Exposure to three complementary engineering and manufacturing businesses
Contemporary laser cutting, fabrication and manufacturing capability
Vehicle, phone and laptop
Quality CRM plus other tools to support the role.
Competitive base salary plus performance incentives
Direct access to decision-makers and technical teams
The ability to influence where our client grows next
The lifestyle benefits of living and working in the Albury-Wodonga region
For the right candidate, this is an opportunity to take an established manufacturing capability and
build a much larger market around it.
If you have a track record of creating opportunities, winning technical B2B work and building business rather than simply maintaining it, we want to hear from you.
