About the role
n
The Senior Dual Diagnosis Counsellor – Youth and Families plays a key role in delivering culturally safe therapeutic services to Aboriginal people experiencing multiple and complex needs, including mental health concerns, complex trauma, dual diagnosis, and dual disability.
n
This role is responsible for providing evidence-based interventions to individuals, families, and groups, including young people.
n
Working within the SEWB framework and relevant Victorian mental health standards, the clinician ensures all practice is culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and aligned with best practice principles.

Key Responsibilities
n
n
- Deliver culturally protected, trauma-informed counselling, mental health intake and risk assessments, individual treatment planning, and referrals for Aboriginal individuals, young people and families experiencing complex mental health, alcohol and other drug,
grief, trauma or self-harm concerns.
n
- Provide psychosocial education, harm-minimisation support and group interventions; maintain accurate records and KPI reporting; and contribute to staff development, orientation and service delivery across locations as required.

- Build effective relationships with community members, internal teams and external partners to strengthen clinical outcomes, culturally responsive practice, compliance, audit readiness and continuous improvement aligned with the MDAS Strategic Plan.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience
n
n
- Diploma or higher qualification in psychology, counselling, social work or a related field, with relevant professional membership or registration where applicable.
n
- Demonstrated experience delivering culturally safe, trauma-informed counselling, evidence-based interventions, mental health intake and risk assessments, individual treatment planning and referrals for Aboriginal individuals, young people and families with complex mental health, trauma, dual diagnosis or alcohol and other drug needs.

- Strong communication, stakeholder engagement, group facilitation, recordkeeping and reporting skills, supported by sound knowledge of social and emotional wellbeing, harm minimisation, professional therapeutic practice, legislative compliance and MDAS policies and procedures.
