Hume Public School, located in Lavington on Wiradjuri Country near the NSW/Victorian border, is a dynamic and inclusive school community of 224 students. Our vibrant student body includes 30% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and 11% from EAL/D backgrounds.

We offer a Special Education Unit alongside our preschool and mainstream classes. This unit provides a nurturing and supportive environment for students in our Multi-Categorical (MC), Moderate/Severe Intellectual (IO/IS), and Early Intervention classes—all situated within the mainstream school grounds. Our staff collaborate closely within the unit and with mainstream colleagues to deliver high-quality, inclusive educational experiences grounded in best practices.

Currently, our school is focused on strengthening evidence-informed teaching through a whole-school approach that includes explicit instruction, consistent behaviour expectations, communication supports, and engaging, high-quality learning programs designed to maximise student achievement. Our staff work collaboratively with families and external agencies to promote positive educational, social, and wellbeing outcomes for all students.

General Selection Criteria

- 1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
- 2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programmes
- 3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
- 4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
- 5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
- 6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy

Specific Selection Criteria

- Approval to teach Special Education and/or experience to teach students Years K-6 with complex needs including moderate to severe intellectual disability, emotional disturbance, autism, behaviour difficulties and those who have associated support needs due to sensory processing disorders.
- A highly visible and collaborative leader who builds authentic relationships and partnerships with all stakeholders to foster a culture of continuous improvement, inclusive practice, equity, student wellbeing and voice and community engagement.
- Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills to build teachers’ and SLSOs’ professional and leadership capabilities through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and collaboration. Skilled at managing diverse perspectives and priorities, fostering trust and team cohesion, and maintaining a shared commitment to positive student outcomes.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead student-centred wellbeing practices and whole-school processes, including current DoE priorities, resulting in enhanced student engagement, and an inclusive school culture working in partnership with the wider community.

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement.
