About Diabetes Australia

Diabetes Australia is the national peak body supporting people living with and at risk of diabetes. An ACNC-registered charity with annual revenue exceeding $100 million, Diabetes Australia advocates for people living with diabetes, drives national health policy, funds impactful research and delivers programs that improve health outcomes across Australia. The organisation works closely with people living with diabetes, health professionals, researchers, governments and stakeholders to reduce the incidence and impact of diabetes on individuals, health systems and society.

Guided by its vision of a future where every person at risk of or living with diabetes can thrive, Diabetes Australia is shaping its next strategic phase around four ambitious goals: curing diabetes through research and innovation, preventing diabetes, reducing complications and improving quality of life, and lessening the financial burden of diabetes on individuals and the healthcare system.

The board comprises nine directors, including two positions reserved for health professionals or individuals with equivalent experience.

Key selection criteria

The board is seeking to appoint an independent, non-executive director with a clinical background who can contribute strategic insight,



contemporary healthcare knowledge and stakeholder engagement expertise.

Candidates must demonstrate three or more of the following:

- Current or recent experience as a practising clinician with direct patient care responsibilities and an understanding of contemporary healthcare delivery
- Experience contributing at a strategic level within the health, community, government or not-for-profit sectors
- Understanding of emerging trends in healthcare delivery, digital health, artificial intelligence and changing consumer expectations
- The ability to contribute effectively within a governance environment and exercise sound judgement on complex organisational issues
- Membership of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, Australian Diabetes Society or an equivalent professional organisation
- A demonstrated commitment to improving health outcomes and advancing the interests of people living with diabetes and other chronic health conditions

Highly desirable

- Experience with, or a close connection to, diabetes or another chronic health condition
- Experience engaging with consumers, members, communities or stakeholders
- Fundraising, partnership development or advocacy experience
- Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health,



culturally diverse communities or health equity initiatives
- Prior board, committee or advisory experience, or the demonstrated ability to contribute effectively in a governance workplace

Remuneration and time commitment

Directors receive a board fee benchmarked appropriately for a national charity board, with reasonable board-related expenses reimbursed.

The board meets quarterly in person, generally rotating between Australian capital cities, with an additional annual strategy workshop and a virtual financial reporting meeting. Directors are also expected to serve on at least one board committee.
