Equine Hospital - Facilities Assistant – Casual

Working across the hospital, facilities and reproduction areas, the successful applicant will assist with the day-to-day care of hospital and reproduction horses, maintaining facilities and supporting the veterinary, nursing and reproduction teams. This is a varied, hands‐on role suited to someone who enjoys working with horses and wants to be part of a busy equine hospital and reproduction environment.

Key responsibilities

Facilities & Hospital Duties

n

n
- Feeding and watering hospital and reproduction horses according to established schedules.
n
- Cleaning and maintaining hospital stables, yards, walk-in/walk-out areas and paddocks.
n
- Maintaining clean, secure and well‐presented hospital and facility areas.
n
- Handling client‐owned horses as directed by the nursing and veterinary teams.
n
- Assisting with moving, catching and restraining horses for examinations and treatment.
n
- Waste management across hospital and reproduction areas.
n
- Monitoring water troughs, fencing and general facilities and reporting maintenance requirements.
n
- Assisting with the safe use and general care of equipment and machinery.
n
- Supporting the wider GVEH team with practical day‐to‐day tasks as required.

Reproduction Duties

n

n
- Assisting with the daily care and management of recipient and client mares.
n
- Handling and moving recipient mares and assisting with embryo transfer preparation.
n
- Preparing the phantom/collection area and assisting with chilled semen collections and shipments.
n
- Assisting with embryo flushes and transfers.
n
- Maintaining cleanliness and stock levels within the reproduction barn and hospital.
n




- Supporting the reproduction team during the busy breeding season.
n

About you

n

n
- Confident and competent handling horses of different sizes and temperaments.
n
- Genuine passion for horses and animal welfare.
n
- Reliable, self‐motivated and takes pride in their work.
n
- Can follow instructions while also working independently.
n
- Works well as part of a team and is willing to assist across different areas of the hospital.
n
- Good attention to detail and can maintain accurate records where required.
n
- Comfortable working in a busy and seasonal environment.
n
- Holds a current Australian driver's licence.
n
- Previous experience in an equine hospital, veterinary practice, reproduction facility, stud or professional horse setting would be highly regarded.
n
- A Farm Chemical Users Course, chainsaw certification and experience operating farm machinery are desirable but not essential.

Inherent Requirements

n

This role involves standing for extended periods, repetitive movements and manual handling of products weighing up to 15 kg. The position also requires regular physical activity associated with horse handling, cleaning, feeding and maintaining hospital and reproduction facilities.
