Northern Underground Cable Finder is looking for a Trainee Underground Service Locator to join our team in Cairns.

No previous underground service locating experience is required. Full training will be provided to the right person.

This is an opportunity to learn a specialised skill and build a long-term career in the underground utility locating industry.

We are looking for someone who is practical, reliable, keen to learn and takes pride in doing their job properly. Previous experience in civil construction, electrical, plumbing, telecommunications, surveying, earthmoving or a similar trade would be an advantage, but it is not essential.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will be trained to locate and identify underground services before excavation, drilling and construction work takes place.

The role involves working across a wide variety of civil, construction, commercial and infrastructure projects throughout Cairns and Far North Queensland.

You will learn how to:

- Locate underground electrical, communications, water, sewer, stormwater and other services
- Use specialised electromagnetic locating equipment
- Use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
- Read and interpret underground service plans and BYDA information
- Understand how different underground services are installed and identified
- Mark underground services accurately on site
- Record service depths and locations
- Take clear photographs and maintain accurate field records
- Prepare professional underground service locating reports
- Assist with the verification of underground services using hydro-vac / non-destructive digging
- Communicate professionally with clients, contractors and site personnel
- Complete site safety documentation including JSEA/JSA requirements
- Work safely around civil construction sites and underground infrastructure
- Care for and maintain specialised locating equipment and company vehicles

Initially,



you will work alongside an experienced locator while completing on-the-job training. As your skills and competency develop, you will progress toward completing locating jobs independently.

We are not necessarily looking for someone who already knows how to locate underground services.

We are looking for the right person to train.

You will need to be someone who:

- Is practical and enjoys problem-solving
- Is comfortable working outdoors
- Can follow instructions and procedures carefully
- Takes safety seriously
- Is confident communicating with clients and contractors
- Can work independently once trained
- Is comfortable using phones, tablets and basic computer programs
- Takes care of equipment, vehicles and tools
- Is willing to travel throughout Far North Queensland when required
- Takes pride in producing accurate, professional work

Because underground service locating is a safety-critical role, attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures are extremely important.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have:

- Current Australian driver's licence
- Construction White Card, or willingness to obtain one
- Valuable written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer/tablet skills
- Ability to work outdoors in Far North Queensland conditions
- Ability to travel for regional work when required
- Australian working rights

A police check and other site-specific requirements may be required depending on the projects being undertaken.

HIGHLY REGARDED





Experience in any of the following areas would be beneficial, but is not essential:

- Civil construction
- Electrical work
- Telecommunications
- Plumbing
- Surveying
- Earthmoving or excavation
- Hydro-vac / non-destructive digging
- Utility installation
- Construction or infrastructure projects
- Working with plans or drawings
- Previous use of electronic testing or locating equipment

TRAINING

Full on-the-job training will be provided.

The successful applicant will be trained in:

- Underground service locating techniques
- Electromagnetic locating
- Ground Penetrating Radar
- Reading underground utility plans
- Underground service identification
- Safe work practices
- Field reporting and documentation
- Relevant underground service locating qualifications and competencies as required

There is significant responsibility involved in underground service locating, so we are looking for someone who genuinely wants to learn the trade and develop into a competent professional locator.

LOCATION & TRAVEL

The position is based in Cairns, however our work takes us throughout Far North Queensland.

There will be occasions where regional travel and overnight stays are required. Accommodation and approved work-related travel expenses are provided when applicable.
