equity and inclusion.About the roleThe Client Services Officer is a key cultural and practical support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients engaging with the criminal justice system.Working closely with lawyers and other internal and external service providers, you will:provide culturally safe client support before, during and after courthelp clients understand legal processes in plain languageidentify non-legal needs and risksprovide short-term intensive casework and warm referralsadvocate for clients with services and agenciesstrengthen connections between VALS, community and local support networksThis is a highly rewarding role for someone who is empathetic, proactive, organised and deeply committed to community wellbeing.What you'll be doingIn this role, you will:Support clients to navigate court processes and legal appointments across Metro MelbourneAttend courts across Metro VIC with clients and provide practical and cultural supportAssess client needs, identify risks and coordinate referrals to relevant servicesUndertake welfare checks, client transport and other community-based support activities where appropriateWork collaboratively with solicitors, paralegals, community services and government agenciesMaintain strong local service knowledge and referral pathwaysBuild and maintain trusted relationships with Aboriginal communitiesRepresent VALS at meetings,



forums and community engagement activitiesComplete case notes, reports and administrative tasks accurately and on timeWhat we're looking forWe are looking for someone who brings:Strong connections to and experience working with Aboriginal communitiesA sound understanding of the Victorian legal system and the barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoplesExperience in community services, client support, casework or advocacyExcellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and maintain confidentialityThe ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary teamStrong organisation and time management skillsConfidence using Microsoft Office and client management systemsQualifications / experienceYou will ideally hold a certificate, diploma or degree in community services, social work or a related field.
