Role: Electorate Officer – Dr Hugh McDermott MP
Dr Hugh McDermott MP is the Member of Prospect, representing one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse communities in NSW.
He is also the Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General, assisting the Attorney General to deliver policies and law reform that will maintain and improve Australia's law and justice framework.
Dr McDermott requires a full-time Electorate Officer to assist him in his capacity as Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General and Member for Prospect.
The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with constituent matters, community engagement, media, and policy matters.
They will be expected to provide assistance on State government matters such as education, health, public transport, sports, multicultural affairs, social housing, and local government.
The role provides front-facing and direct support to constituents and local community groups, which may require ministerial representations, referrals to local services, community-based campaigns, funding advice, and advocacy to NSW Departmental agencies.
The candidate will also engage in secretarial and research functions on community and policy matters, and will be responsible for preparing media releases and effectively communicating with stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be expected to alternatively work from the Electorate Office, Smithfield and the Parliamentary Office, Macquarie Street, Sydney.
Key duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
Address and handle constituent matters
Drafting official written correspondence to Ministerial Offices, Councils, and community stakeholders
Provide support and assistance to local community groups
Liaising with community and religious organisations, such as sports and recreation clubs, churches, schools, local service providers, etc.
Drafting and organising community updates, flyers, and mail communication
Drafting media releases and updating social media platforms
Liaising with local newspapers and journalists
Answering phone, email, and in person enquiries
Assisting with the planning and organisation of community initiatives
The successful candidate should possess the following skills and qualifications:
High levels of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality
Excellent research and analytical skills
Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills
Excellent time management and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
Experience in a similar role in a private or public sector workplace
Proficient knowledge of policy development and implementation
Employment Conditions
$86,099 - $97,928 (will be negotiated depending on relevant skills and experience) plus superannuation and annual leave loading
An initial probationary period of 3 months will apply and may be subject to extension.
