Experienced Farm Hand - Pastures & Fodder Cropping Specialist, Central Victoria The Story n
Our client is a progressive, family-owned farming business managing a 4,800-hectare aggregation near Avenel in Central Victoria. The property is currently undergoing a strategic transition focused on lifting carrying capacity, optimising livestock performance, and driving an aggressive, high-performing perennial pasture renewal program. To support this growth, they are seeking a skilled, practical Experienced Farm Hand to lead their pasture and cropping operations. This role is tailored for a machinery-literate person who takes pride in growing high-yielding fodder crops, improving soil fertility, and maintaining clean, productive pastures while contributing to general livestock duties across the property.
The Operation n
The property features diverse terrain ranging from undulating country to high-performing river flats, running approximately 7,000 dual-purpose Merino ewes and a commercial Angus beef herd of 320 breeders. Pasture innovation is central to the farm's strategy, utilising structured rotation programs to clean up weeds and establish permanent perennial pastures. The cropping program typically begins with a Brassica fodder crop in year one, followed by one to two years of winter cereal crops for silage/hay, before sowing down to high-grade perennial pastures. Cleaner paddocks follow a ryegrass-and-clover phase prior to perennial establishment, with select high-quality soil paddocks cut for silage annually. The farm utilises modern plant, including a 140hp Massey Ferguson (Trimble GPS) and a 155hp John Deere (GreenStar GPS),



paired with a trailing Stoll spray unit with section control, speed discs, scarifiers, seeders, and urea spreaders. Hay and silage harvesting operations are fully supported by external contractors.
The Role n
n
Cropping & Pastures:
Executing ground preparation, sowing, weed control, fertiliser spreading, and pasture renovation programs across the property.

Machinery Operation & Care:
Operating GPS-equipped machinery, managing precision spraying, and maintaining plant and equipment in first-class working order.
n
General Farm & Livestock Duties:
Assisting with sheep and cattle husbandry (including mustering, drafting, and shearing prep), water checks, and routine farm maintenance.

The Ideal Candidate n
n
Demonstrated experience in fodder cropping, pasture renovation, weed identification, and spray application.
n
Proficiency in operating modern tractors with GPS guidance systems and broadacre gear.
n
Solid livestock experience (particularly with sheep), with a willingness to roll up your sleeves for general stock work.
n
Practical maintenance skills for farm machinery, plant, and general infrastructure.
n
A reliable team player with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and valuable working dogs (an advantage).
