Immersed Fisheries is seeking a motivated and reliable
Trainee Diver / Deckhand
to join the crew of
FV Thor
, working in Queensland's commercial beche‐de‐mer (sea cucumber) fishery on the Great Barrier Reef.
n
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in the commercial fishing and diving industry.
Previous commercial diving experience is not essential
for the right applicant. We are looking for someone with a strong work ethic, a good attitude and a genuine willingness to learn.
n
The successful applicant will initially work as a deckhand while learning all aspects of vessel operations and the beche‐de‐mer fishery, with the opportunity to progress into a commercial harvest diving role once appropriately trained, qualified and assessed as competent.
The Role n
Working as part of a small crew aboard FV Thor, your duties will include:
n

General deckhand duties and vessel operations
n
Assisting commercial divers and supporting diving operations
n
Preparing, checking and maintaining diving equipment
n
Handling, sorting and processing catch
n
Vessel cleaning and general maintenance
n
Mooring, anchoring and other deck operations
n
Participating in vessel safety drills and procedures
n
Learning safe commercial diving practices and procedures
n
Progressing toward commercial harvest diving duties once appropriately qualified and competent
n
Working closely with the skipper and experienced crew
n
n
This is a
hands‐on, physically demanding role
. Trips involve living and working aboard FV Thor for extended periods while operating in remote areas of the Great Barrier Reef.
About You n
We are looking for someone who:

Is reliable, hardworking and willing to learn
n
Is physically fit and comfortable working in and around the ocean
n
Is a confident swimmer
n
Works well as part of a small team
n




Can follow instructions and established safety procedures
n
Has a positive attitude and takes pride in their work
n
Is comfortable being away from home while the vessel is at sea
n
Has an interest in developing a career in commercial diving and fishing
n
Understands that vessel and diving work can involve long and physically demanding days
n
n
Previous experience in fishing, boating, diving, marine operations, trades, farming or other physically demanding industries would be advantageous, but is not essential.
Qualifications & Requirements n
Applicants must be willing to obtain and maintain all licences, medicals, training and qualifications required for their duties and progression into commercial diving.
n
Relevant marine qualifications, First Aid, recreational or commercial diving experience and previous vessel experience will be viewed favourably.
n
All diving activities aboard FV Thor are conducted in accordance with applicable safety, vessel and commercial diving requirements.
