Shape the future of Canterbury Bankstown Council's digital presence
Be the voice behind a stronger, more connected community.
Are you a strategic Social Media qualified who knows how to turn audience insights, data, and great storytelling into meaningful digital engagement?
We are looking for an experienced Social Media Specialist to lead the development and initial implementation of a new Council-wide Social Media Strategy — helping shape how Council connects with its community across digital channels.
This is an exciting opportunity to make a real organisational impact, working across teams to build a more coordinated, consistent, and effective social media presence.
About the Role
You will review Council's existing social media channels, practices, resources and performance, engage with key stakeholders, and use audience insights to develop a future-focused social media model.
Working closely with the Communications Unit, Manager Communications, Digital Transformation team and Executive Manager Office of the CEO, you will help establish the strategy, governance, and operating model for Council's social media activities.
You will also support the planning, scheduling, and publishing of engaging content across Council's social media channels.
What You Will Do
Develop and implement a Council-wide Social Media Strategy, including objectives, audiences, channels, governance, and measures of success.
Review existing social media activity and identify opportunities to improve performance and engagement.
Analyse audience data, channel performance, and engagement trends to drive evidence-based decisions.
Develop practical recommendations for social media governance, roles, responsibilities, approvals, and content planning.
Support the Communications Unit with the planning, scheduling, and publishing of high-quality content.
Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and social media contributors.
Deliver improvements across content planning, reporting, content standards, author guidance, and channel management.
Identify future resourcing, capability, and support requirements.
Work collaboratively across the organisation to strengthen storytelling, coordination, and accountability.
You are more than someone who simply posts content — you understand why content works, who it needs to reach and how social media can support organisational goals.
You will bring:
Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, or leading social media strategy within a complex organisation.
Strong knowledge of contemporary social media platforms, audience behaviour, content trends, analytics, and digital engagement.
Experience using data and insights to improve content performance and channel effectiveness.
Experience developing social media governance frameworks, operating models, content standards, or reporting approaches.
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to prepare strategies, reports, guidelines, briefings, and executive-ready recommendations.
Strong project management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
Sound judgement and the ability to manage sensitive issues, reputational risks, and community-facing communications.
Experience with social media management and analytics tools such as Hootsuite, Meta Business Suite, Meta Ads Manager, Brolly or similar.
Experience in local government or the public sector, or knowledge of human-centred design, service design, organisational change, business improvement, accessibility, and inclusive communications will be highly regarded.
Make an Impact
This is an opportunity to do more than manage social channels.
You will help shape the strategy, systems and standards that underpin Council's future social media presence, while helping create clearer, more engaging, and more consistent communication with the community.
If you are a strategic thinker, creative storyteller, and digital communications professional ready to make your mark, we would love to hear from you.
