The opportunity

We are seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander woman who is passionate about supporting her community and has the skills, experience and commitment to provide culturally appropriate alcohol and other drug (AOD) support to Aboriginal people. This is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified position. Being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander woman is a genuine occupational requirement of this role, reflecting the nature of the services provided and the specific needs of the community we support.

As a Drug & Alcohol Caseworker, you will provide culturally appropriate AOD services to Aboriginal adults aged 18 years and over who are experiencing drug and/or alcohol-related issues, as well as delivering education and awareness programs to Aboriginal young people.

The role will involve a range of community-based activities, including but not limited to:

- assistance in the development of programs to address drug & alcohol issues within the Aboriginal community
- promotion of drug & alcohol services available to the Aboriginal communities within the region and advocating for, and where possible, contributing to the development of more accessible and appropriate services for Aboriginal clients
- provide advocacy and referral services to alcohol and other drug detoxification/rehabilitation
- promote and provide community development, education and awareness programs
- deliver AOD awareness incursions to all public and participating high schools in the catchment area
- non-clinical AOD counselling

Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation (RivMed) is a long-established Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation in the heart of Wiradjuri Country.

RivMed works to effect change in the most marginalised and vulnerable people in our community. We work to achieve this through the provision of culturally appropriate medical and well-being services for Aboriginal people and their families.

Selection criteria

1. Female Aboriginal - This is an identified Female Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander position. Being an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander woman is a genuine occupational requirement of this role.
2. Cert IV in A&OD;/Mental Health or equivalent, or willingness to undertake study to attain a Cert IV in Community Services (Alcohol & Other Drugs). This may involve travel and over night stays.
3. Ability to work with local Aboriginal communities and the broader community
4. Excellent communication skills, particularly in negotiation and advocacy
5. Ability to build and maintain solid relationships
6. Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to work unsupervised and to timeframes
7. Ability to work as part of a team
