Role Description The Antarctic Medical Practitioner is a full-time, in office role based in Kingston, TAS, with deployment periods to Antarctic stations as required. The role involves providing comprehensive primary and emergency medical care to expeditioners, including clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management. Daily tasks include running medical clinics, maintaining medical records, managing medications and equipment, and overseeing routine health checks and preventative health programs.

The practitioner will participate in emergency response planning, training and drills, and may provide health education and psychological support to station personnel in a remote and extreme environment. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, adherence to safety protocols,



and participation in pre-departure briefings and post-mission reporting are integral to the position.

Qualifications

- Current medical degree and registration as a medical practitioner, with eligibility for registration in Australia.
- Postgraduate experience in areas such as emergency medicine, general practice, anaesthetics, intensive care, or remote/rural medicine.
- Demonstrated capability in emergency response, trauma management, and stabilisation of critically ill or injured patients.
- Experience working in remote, resource-limited, or isolated environments, with strong clinical decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to provide clear instructions, documentation, and telemedicine consultations.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in small, diverse teams and to support the wellbeing of colleagues in challenging conditions.
- High level of resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving skills suitable for extreme environments and extended deployments.
- Completion of relevant life support and trauma courses (e.g., ALS/ACLS, ATLS, or equivalent) and willingness to undertake additional AAD training.
- Physical and psychological fitness to meet deployment medical standards and participate in station safety and emergency duties.
- Australian citizenship or appropriate work rights, and the ability to meet security, health, and vaccination requirements.
