Key Relationships The Assistant Accountant functionally reports to the Head of Finance who will provide supervision and direction. This position will work closely with the Business
Office team and provide accounting services to other School staff. The Assistant
Accountant is ultimately responsible to the Principal via the Director of Business
Operations.
Position Objective:
The Assistant Accountant is responsible for providing accounting services to the Westminster School group of entities.
The position is expected to deliver quality and efficient transactional accounting, analysis and reporting services to our key stakeholders throughout the School.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide internal financial accounting for the School and associated entities
- Assist with the accounting work for the following entities: Westminster School, Westminster School Foundation,
and Cliff Hawkins Property Trust.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly management reports (including P&L;, balance sheet, cash
flow/cash position, variance analysis)
- On behalf of our key stakeholders this role will be accountable for;
o Posting actual and accrual journals as required o Preparation of monthly and quarterly balance sheet reconciliations, including cash management and bank reconciliations o Maintaining the Asset Register including the calculation of depreciation o Preparation of work papers for regulatory returns
- Assisting with preparing annual budgets
- Uploading, reconciling and reporting of budget data in the financial system
- Assisting in preparing annual financial statements for Westminster School, Westminster School Foundation and
Cliff Hawkins Property Trust 2. Delivery of effective and effective financial services to internal and external stakeholders
- Assist and support budget holders with budget submission preparation
- Provide key stakeholders with analysis in relation to business performance, including reporting performance
against budget
- Liaise with external auditors including assembling audit data and providing responses to queries as required
- Effective and timely collaboration with internal and external stakeholders as required
3. Foundation
- Work with the Financial Accountant to provide a comprehensive accounting service for Westminster School
Foundation Inc and provide support to Foundation’s Executive Officer on accounting issues as they arise, including:
o Ensuring all processing is undertaken in a timely manner (including the processing of creditor payments, receipts and journals for accruals).
o Preparation of reconciliations regarding inter-entity transactions accounts and loans between the
School and the Foundation o Ensuring all other accounting requirements of the Foundation are completed accurately through to financial reporting to key stakeholders
4.
Accounts Payable and Creditors
End-to-end accounts payable processing, including but not limited to:
- System maintenance of suppliers, invoicing, purchase orders, supplier payments and reconciliation of supplier
statements
- Customer service and liaison with suppliers and staff, including providing staff training
- Reconciliation and processing of credit card statements
- Recording FBT transactions and providing input into the annual FBT return
- Creditor statement/accounts
5. Other Responsibilities
- Provide assistance to the Business Office staff generally
Key Selection Criteria: Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Degree level qualifications in Accounting/Finance/Economics or similar
- Minimum 1-2 years accounting experience
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills
- Highly numerate and strong analytical capabilities
- Demonstrated high initiative and strong interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of current Australian accounting standards
