About the Role

Curtin FM 100.1 has been part of Perth's media landscape for 50 years and is Western Australia’s most popular community radio station. Supported by Curtin University, it is a self-funded, ACMA-licensed community radio station powered by a small professional team and around 100 dedicated volunteers. We're looking for an Associate Director to lead the station's strategic direction, editorial voice and commercial sustainability into its next chapter.

This is a senior leadership role and is responsible for setting the station's on-air format and content strategy, driving audience growth and sponsorship revenue and representing Curtin FM to the relevant Authority, Advisory Board, sponsors and the University at the highest level.

Working closely with the Director, Corporate Communications, the Associate Director develops a deep understanding of the station's regulatory environment, audience and commercial position to guide its strategy, with support from University finance, legal and compliance functions for the technical detail of that work.

This role sits within Corporate Communications, where a small, high-performing team protects and builds Curtin's public profile and reputation, of which Curtin FM is one of the University's most distinctive and long-standing assets.

Your responsibilities will include

- Set strategic and editorial direction: Set the station's on-air format, content strategy and editorial direction, ensuring content is both entertaining and educational across Curtin FM and its digital, social and streaming channels.

- Drive commercial sustainability: Lead sponsorship strategy, revenue growth and sustainability efforts in pursuit of the station's financial independence from the University.

- Represent the station at the highest level: Act as the station's senior representative to the regulatory Authority, Advisory Board, sponsors and the wider community, identifying and managing reputational and on-air risk with sound judgement.

- Provide strategic leadership: Provide strategic leadership and support to the station's extensive volunteer workforce and small professional team.

- Oversee regulatory compliance: Oversee the station's compliance with ACMA and CBAA requirements, copyright legislation and the Competition and Consumer Act, with support from University finance, legal and compliance functions.

- Modernise the station's digital presence: Grow and modernise the station's digital,



social and streaming presence to reach current audiences.

Who we are looking for

Selection Criteria

- A relevant degree in journalism, media, communications, business or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

- Demonstrated senior experience in media, journalism, broadcast or communications leadership, including setting editorial or content direction and maintaining on-air, on-brand or publication standards.

- Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team, including workload prioritisation and mentoring.

- Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills, including experience liaising with senior executives, boards or committees, and the ability to represent an organisation to media, sponsors and the community.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor content and messaging for varied audiences.

- Willingness and ability to develop working knowledge of the station's financial and regulatory obligations (ACMA, APRA, CBAA and the Community Broadcasting Codes of Practice), with support from University finance, legal and compliance functions.

- Previous experience preparing or managing a budget, or working alongside a finance business partner function, is desirable.

- Previous experience in a university or other large, complex organisation is desirable.

- Familiarity with broadcast technical infrastructure and transmission requirements is desirable.

Role Requirements

- As this is a continuing (permanent) role, you will require permanent work rights in Australia to be considered.

- Interstate and/or overseas travel may be required.

- Ability to work outside of normal office hours, including weekends, when required.

This full time, continuing position attracts a remuneration package of $152,905 - $167,669 (G10) superannuation.
