Chief Operating Officer

Bicycle Network | Abbotsford | Executive appointment

Help shape the next chapter of one of Australia's most recognised cycling organisations and help more people riding more often.

The Opportunity to Make an Impact

Bicycle Network is seeking a passionate, commercially astute and highly experienced Chief Operating Officer to turn strategy into strong customer, commercial, operational and community outcomes.

This is a high-impact, hands-on executive role with genuine scope to make a difference. You will work across practical delivery, organisational transformation, strategic planning and Board discussions. It will suit someone who enjoys pace, variety and being close to the work. The expectations are high, but so is the opportunity to create exceptional experiences, strengthen performance and keep the organisation moving forward.

The Role

Reporting to the CEO, you will be a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and lead governance, management systems and organisational performance. You will work closely with the Board and your leadership colleagues, enabling the CEO to focus increasingly on public affairs, advocacy, partnerships and external relationships.

Your priorities will include

Strategy & Performance

· Lead strategic planning and the ongoing development of Bicycle Network's strategy with the CEO, Leadership Team and Board.

· Support and challenge senior leaders to pursue stretch targets, exceed budgets and build a sustainable annual surplus.

· Build and maintain a sustainable three-year financial and operating model, supported by strategic reporting on financial performance, impact and reach.

Customer, Events & Participation

· Build a clear understanding of members, riders, participants and customers, and use that insight to improve experience, reach and impact.

· Build and strengthen events through continuous improvement and an uncompromising customer-first approach,

with major events planned well in advance and embedded positively in host communities.

· Transform community engagement through capacity, building programs that create greater, lasting and scalable behaviour change.

Commercial & Financial Sustainability

· Provide leadership and support to diversify revenue beyond ticket sales through sponsorship, government investment, fundraising, membership, contracts and new commercial opportunities.

People, Culture & Capacity

· Partner with the GM People and Culture to strengthen structures, performance management, policies, capability and development pathways.

Governance, systems and Transformation

· Drive digital transformation and better use of systems, data, artificial intelligence and emerging technology to improve efficiency, performance and reach.

· Support the Board and its subcommittees, lead effective strategy days and create an environment that welcomes open conversation, questions and curiosity.

We are looking for someone who brings

You will be a senior and experienced executive who combines strategic judgement with commercial acumen, strong financial literacy and an eye for operational detail. You will be energised by Bicycle Network's purpose and motivated by the opportunity to improve people's health and wellbeing.

You will ideally bring

· Substantial experience leading complex, multidisciplinary functions and organisational change.

· Demonstrated commercial success across revenue growth, business development,

contracts and performance against stretch targets.

· A record of creating exceptional customer experiences and using customer and member insight to improve performance.

· Experience leading major events, complex programs or comparable customer-facing operations.

· Strong capability in budgeting, forecasting, governance, risk, Board reporting and long-term financial planning.

· Experience leading digital transformation and using data to improve decisions, customer outcomes and organisational impact.

· Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent senior executive experience. A CA, CPA or comparable qualification would be highly regarded for the finance-focused portfolio.

Appointment Options

Our preference is to appoint one highly experienced full-time COO with the breadth to lead the complete portfolio. We are also open to considering two complementary part-time executives working a combined six days each week:

- Four days per week: Strategy, Events, Commercial, Customer Experience, and participation in member, community, rider and advocacy activations.
- Two days per week: Strategy, Finance, Management Systems, People and Culture, Board Governance and Risk.

If divided, both appointments will work as one leadership team with the CEO and share accountability for implementing Bicycle Network's strategy.

Why join us?

You will have the prospect to:

- Shape the future direction of a purpose-led national organisation.
- Work closely with the CEO, Board and Executive Leadership Team.
- Influence strategy while staying close to operational delivery.
- Lead meaningful organisational and commercial transformation.
- Help create healthier, more connected communities through more people riding more often.

If you wish to apply, send an email to [email protected]. Applications closing Friday 16 October 2026.
