ABOUT THE ROLE

Our Canning Vale beverage can manufacturing facility is looking for an experienced Engineering Lead to direct all maintenance and engineering activity on site. You will make sure the site runs on the best possible maintenance practices and gets the engineering services and leadership it needs.

This is a hands-on leadership role in a fast-paced, continuously running production environment. You will lead a multi-disciplinary trades team and own the plant repair and maintenance budget. You will also drive capital projects from business case through to commissioning and be the site's go-to technical authority on equipment, materials, processes and procedures.

ROLE SCOPE

- Direct reports: 13 – the site's engineering team of electricians, fitters, engineers and stores
- Site: Canning Vale beverage can manufacturing facility, approximately 62 employees across one production line
- Budget: Accountable for plant repair and maintenance expenditure remaining within budget
- Capital: Develops and manages the capital project budget for new equipment installations
- Availability: Leads the annual plant overhaul and planned maintenance days, with out-of-hours support when required

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Engineering Leadership

- Oversee all aspects of engineering on site, ensuring strong support across departments to maintain efficient and effective production
- Lead, direct and develop the engineering trades team, including day-to-day direction, rostering and performance management
- Manage electrical engineering activities and coordinate the work of the engineering tradespeople
- Provide technical support and training to team members to build their understanding of plant systems and automation
- Assist in the training and onboarding of new employees

Maintenance Strategy & Reliability
- Implement maintenance programs that ensure the facilities, machinery and resources needed to meet all KPI objectives are available
- Lead, direct and expedite maintenance strategies in a way that meets budget requirements
- Use current production and sales schedules to recommend the planning of maintenance and overhaul activities to the Manufacturing Manager
- Implement systems and procedures that immediately flag significant deviations from maintenance schedules
- Work with operators to analyse and rectify the root causes of unreliable machinery and equipment
- Design, develop and implement maintenance systems that optimise production efficiency and quality

Maintenance Delivery & Troubleshooting




- Ensure preventative maintenance is carried out on mechanical and electrical systems in line with site requirements
- Lead the response to machine breakdowns, ensuring corrective action is taken promptly to minimise downtime
- Troubleshoot equipment issues, assess problems and estimate repair times
- Conduct root cause analysis of system failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Oversee the installation of machinery, tools and equipment to specification
- Direct modifications to machines and equipment in consultation with the Manufacturing Manager
- Make effective use of MEX (CMMS), log books, PM check sheets, drawings, diagrams and technical manuals

Annual Overhaul & Planned Maintenance
- Partner with the Manufacturing Manager to ensure start-ups and planned maintenance days are successful and meet objectives
- Plan and manage the annual plant overhaul, taking direct responsibility for all work carried out on plant equipment
- Direct day shift personnel and production shift employees during overhaul periods

Budget Management
- Work with the Equipment Reliability Coordinator and Maintenance Supervisor to keep repair and maintenance expenditure within budget
- Maintain the capability and reliability of production equipment and processes within available funding
- Approve maintenance and repair expenditure within the agreed budget
- Ensure purchasing of maintenance supplies is accurate, recorded and resolved promptly when issues arise

Capital Projects
- Lead capital project work, including developing the capital budget
- Build the business case for new projects and improvements
- Produce scopes of work and project plans
- Liaise with external contractors and OEMs on design and pricing
- Manage the installation and commissioning of new equipment on time and within budget
- Oversee the completion of site acceptance testing

Engineering Systems & Documentation
- Ensure all maintenance systems comply with industry standards and regulations
- Develop and maintain documentation for maintenance systems, including schematics, diagrams and software programs
- Maintain the site drawings register and control system architecture
- Develop work instructions and troubleshooting guides

Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all mechanical and electrical systems and practices comply with safety standards and regulations
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards
- Hold technical authority over the safe return to service of plant and equipment, including sign-off on isolation and lockout
- Halt contractor or OEM work that does not meet Orora's HSEQ standards
- Liaise with regulators such as WorkSafe WA and Building and Energy WA on technical and compliance matters
- Promote a strong culture of safety within the team and across the site

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Work closely with Production, Maintenance,



Purchasing and Safety/Quality teams to ensure seamless operations
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement process improvements
- Actively participate in continuous improvement activities across safety, quality, productivity, communication and teamwork
- Support the development of autonomous work groups and a site-wide commitment to Safety, Environment and Quality systems
- Respond to technical requests on repair and maintenance, covering both electrical and mechanical engineering concepts

KEY CHALLENGES
- Balancing reactive breakdown response with proactive, planned maintenance on a continuously running production line
- Maintaining the reliability of ageing plant and equipment within available budget
- Leading a trades workforce across rotating shift patterns, including out-of-hours emergency callouts
- Coordinating external OEMs and contractors on capital projects while minimising production downtime
- Upholding safety-critical isolation and lockout requirements under production pressure to restore uptime
- Sourcing spare parts and managing supply lead times for an ageing asset base

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

Essential

- Recognised mechanical or electrical trade qualification
- Post-trade qualification (Advanced Trade Certificate, Diploma or equivalent)
- 5–10 years' experience in a manufacturing, mining, industrial or FMCG workplace, including leadership responsibility
- Current working knowledge of the WA Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and relevant standards, including AS/NZS 3000, ISO 55001 and ISO 45001

Desirable
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles and their application
- Experience with MEX or a similar CMMS

Skills & Attributes

- Sound understanding of electrical systems, mechanical tooling, building services and engineering document control
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, projects and operational challenges in a complex environment
