UPPAREL | Contract / Consulting Engagement | Australian Freight Network
Help UPPAREL build a more efficient, reliable and scalable national recycling collection network.
We’re seeking an experienced Freight & Logistics Optimisation Consultant to review our Australian freight and reverse-logistics operations, identify measurable cost savings and develop a practical implementation roadmap.
This engagement suits a commercially minded consultant with deep Australian freight expertise and a proven record of turning analysis into operational improvements.
About the engagement
UPPAREL operates two collection channels across Australia:
- Direct-to-consumer (D2C): Recycling collections from residential customers.
- Business-to-business (B2B): Scheduled and ad-hoc collections from retailers, corporates, manufacturers, government organisations and other commercial partners, ranging from cartons to pallets and bulk freight.
Our logistics challenge is to collect material efficiently from a widely dispersed customer base and consolidate it into processing locations. Your focus will be to reduce total logistics costs, simplify our provider network and improve collection reliability while supporting future growth.
What you’ll do
- Audit our existing freight network, including carriers, contracts, rates, collection volumes, service levels, surcharges and operational processes.
- Establish a validated cost and performance baseline, supported by cost-to-serve analysis and freight benchmarking.
- Review D2C and B2B collection models across metropolitan, regional and remote locations.
- Identify opportunities to improve routes, collection frequency, freight utilisation, backhauls and consolidation.
- Recommend the right mix of national, regional, specialist and in-house transport solutions, including carrier procurement and negotiation opportunities.
- Assess booking, tracking, exception management, invoice reconciliation and reporting processes,
and recommend practical technology improvements.
- Develop freight KPIs, service-level agreements and provider scorecards.
- Build an owned or leased fleet business case for Victoria and Current South Wales, comparing outsourced, hybrid and expanded in-house models.
- Develop a prioritised implementation roadmap with clear ownership, costs, risks and measurable benefits.
Key deliverables At the end of the initial engagement, you’ll provide:
- An executive summary of the strongest commercial and operational opportunities.
- A current-state freight cost and performance baseline.
- Cost-to-serve and freight benchmarking analysis.
- A savings opportunity register detailing proposed changes, estimated annual savings, implementation costs, risks and expected payback.
- Recommended provider and network models for D2C and B2B collections.
- A fleet and in-house logistics business case for Victoria and New South Wales, including utilisation thresholds and a clear recommendation.
- A freight KPI, service-level and provider performance framework.
- An implementation roadmap covering immediate (0–3 months), medium-term (3–12 months) and longer-term (12+ months) priorities.
- A benefits measurement plan to track actual savings and service improvements against the agreed baseline.
About you
You’ll bring
- At least 10 years’ experience specialising in freight, transport, logistics or supply chain management.
- Demonstrated success optimising complex Australian freight networks and reverse-logistics operations.
- A strong track record in freight cost reduction, cost-to-serve analysis, carrier benchmarking, procurement and contract negotiation.
- Detailed knowledge of Australian metropolitan, regional and remote freight markets, including pricing structures, fuel levies and additional freight charges.
- The ability to analyse large freight datasets and translate findings into practical commercial recommendations.
- Proven implementation experience, including supporting operational change and provider transitions.
- Confidence presenting recommendations and business cases to senior management and executive stakeholders.
Experience in waste management, recycling, textile recycling, the circular economy, environmental services, multi-site retail, e-commerce returns or other distributed collection networks will be highly regarded. Engagement structure The initial contract will focus on diagnosis, modelling and recommendations. Subject to the outcomes, the engagement may extend to support carrier tendering, negotiations, technology or fleet implementation, provider transitions and ongoing performance improvement.
Success will be measured by sustainable reductions in total logistics costs while maintaining or improving collection reliability, customer experience and operational scalability.
