Australian Retirement Trust – Brisbane QLD

Take hold of a monster opportunity and join Australian Retirement Trust as our Senior Manager, Risk Assurance. You'll lead the design and delivery of independent Line 2 assurance across key operational and enterprise risks, shape a contemporary assurance program, develop a high-performing team and provide evidence-based insights that strengthen decision‑making across the organisation.

Description

We're all about helping our members make the most of their money. And while they go after their goals, you can too. As a Senior Manager, Risk Assurance, you'll play a key leadership role in strengthening the effectiveness of our risk management and control environment.

Reporting to the General Manager, Risk, Members & Enterprise Partners, you'll lead the design and delivery of our Line 2 assurance activities across operational and enterprise risks. You'll establish a risk‑based assurance plan, oversee control testing and deliver clear, evidence‑based insights to senior leaders, executive forums and Board committees.

This is an opportunity to shape and mature a critical assurance capability within a large, purpose‑led and highly regulated organisation. You'll work closely with Line 1 teams, other risk specialists and Internal Audit to improve assurance coverage, reduce duplication and support sustainable improvements to risk practices.

You'll also lead and develop a team of risk assurance professionals, creating an environment where integrity, objectivity, curiosity and continuous improvement are part of how the team operates every day.

This role is a permanent opportunity and is based in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne.

Responsibilities

- Develop and maintain a risk‑based Line 2 Assurance Plan that reflects key risk exposures, regulatory priorities and organisational change.
- Design and enhance assurance methodologies, control‑testing approaches and documentation standards.
- Lead thematic and targeted assurance reviews across key operational and enterprise risk areas.
- Oversee Line 2 control testing across operational risk, technology and cyber risk, third‑party risk, compliance and operational resilience.
- Assess the design and operating effectiveness of key controls and risk management frameworks.
- Deliver clear, practical and evidence‑based assurance reports to senior leaders, executive risk forums and Board committees.
- Identify systemic issues, emerging themes and opportunities to strengthen the organisation's control environment.

- Monitor and report on the remediation of control deficiencies and risk issues identified through assurance activities.
- Contribute assurance outcomes, trends and insights to quarterly risk reporting and risk maturity assessments.
- Ensure assurance activities align with the organisation's risk management framework, policies and applicable APRA prudential standards.
- Support regulatory reviews, external assurance activities and audits by providing relevant evidence, materials and responses.
- Build trusted relationships with Line 1 business teams and control owners to support constructive, credible assurance outcomes.
- Partner with Compliance, Enablement Risk, Investment Risk and other specialist teams to deliver an integrated assurance approach.
- Coordinate with Internal Audit to optimise assurance coverage, minimise duplication and leverage relevant findings.
- Provide subject‑matter expertise to strengthen control design, risk monitoring and self‑assessment practices.
- Lead, coach and develop a high‑performing team of risk assurance professionals.
- Build assurance capability across the broader risk function through coaching, training and knowledge sharing.
- Promote a culture of integrity, objectivity, qualified judgement and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

It goes without saying you'll be a great communicator with top notch interpersonal skills. We'll also expect you to pick up problems and come up with quick, creative ways to solve them. It's quite likely you tick some of the following boxes too:

- You bring extensive experience in risk assurance, internal audit or operational risk within an APRA‑regulated environment.
- Your experience includes designing and delivering assurance programs, control testing activities and assurance methodologies.
- You'll have a strong understanding of APRA prudential standards, risk management frameworks and regulatory assurance requirements.
- You're an experienced people leader with a track record of building, coaching and developing high‑performing teams.
- You can effectively evaluate complex control environments, identify key risks and provide practical, evidence‑based recommendations.
- Your ability to build trusted relationships allows you to influence senior stakeholders and drive meaningful risk and control improvements.

- You'll be an exceptional communicator who can confidently present insights and assurance findings to executive and governance forums.
- You're comfortable using data and analytics to support assurance outcomes and identify trends, themes and emerging risks.
- You bring strong commercial judgement, critical thinking skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
- Your qualifications are likely in business, accounting, risk, audit or a related discipline, with certifications such as CIA, CISA or CPA viewed favourably.
- You'll ideally have significant experience within financial services, superannuation or another highly regulated industry.
