About Greater West Landscapes
Greater West Landscapes (GWL) is a Western Sydney based commercial landscaping and civil construction company delivering projects for some of Sydney's leading developers, builders and government clients. Over the past 10 years we've grown significantly and today have a team of around 150 people. We expect to double again over the next five years.
Our purpose is to build excellence that endures – for our people, our clients and our community.
We are a people-first company. We don't treat people like a number. We are passionate about developing and promoting from within, we say it how it is, and we genuinely care about our people.
Our culture is one of our greatest strengths. But as we've grown, our people systems and processes haven't always kept pace.
Until now, responsibility for People & Culture has been shared across our senior leadership and administration teams. That's no longer enough for a business of our size or where we're heading.
We're investing properly in People & Culture by creating a dedicated division and appointing an experienced leader to build it.
The Opportunity
This is a newly created executive leadership role with the opportunity to shape GWL's People & Culture function from the ground up. Reporting directly to the General Manager, you'll sit alongside the Divisional Leaders of our core business units as part of the Executive Leadership Group.
You'll have a genuine seat at the table and the mandate to build the P&C; division properly – including its structure, systems, processes and, over time, your own team.
Our culture has been built by people, not process, and we're proud of that.
The challenge now is to put the right framework around what already makes GWL great, so our culture and people practices can scale as we grow from 150 to 300+ employees.
This isn't a role for someone looking to inherit a finished HR function.
We're looking for someone who enjoys building – someone equally comfortable discussing workforce strategy at the executive table, coaching a supervisor on site, working through a difficult employee matter, and designing the systems needed for our next stage of growth.
What You'll Lead
Culture & Engagement
Protect and strengthen GWL's culture as we grow. Turn our values into everyday behaviours, lead onboarding and employee engagement, and stay genuinely connected to our people – both in the office and on site.
People Systems & Processes
Build the foundations that will support a 300+ person business, including HR systems, policies, position descriptions, onboarding, employment documentation and meaningful people reporting.
Performance, Development & Leadership
Build a consistent approach to performance and development across GWL, including regular manager check-ins and annual performance reviews. Develop transparent career pathways and internal training programs so our people can continue to grow with GWL and become leaders within our industry.
Coach our supervisors, Project Managers and leaders to hold high standards while genuinely caring for their people.
Recruitment & Workforce Planning
Partner with Divisional Leaders to understand future workforce requirements, recruit great people, strengthen our apprenticeship and trainee pathways, and develop succession plans for key positions.
Employee Relations
Be the trusted adviser to our leaders on complex people matters including performance management, grievances, investigations and workplace issues. Handle difficult situations fairly, practically and promptly while helping our leaders become better people managers.
Compliance & Remuneration
Own our people-related compliance across the Fair Work Act, Modern Awards and employment contracts. Develop remuneration, recognition and retention approaches that reward contribution and help GWL remain a place great people want to join and stay.
Work alongside our Safety team on injury management and return-to-work matters.
People Strategy
Bring the people perspective to company planning and help the Executive Group understand how investment in our people supports GWL's long-term growth and performance.
About You
You're an experienced People & Culture leader who genuinely puts people first – and backs that up with strong systems, accountability and structure. You're as comfortable on a construction site in hi-vis as you are around the executive table.
You're a builder rather than simply a maintainer.
You enjoy taking something valuable and making it better, and you're prepared to remain hands-on while the P&C; team grows around you.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- Significant experience across HR or People & Culture, including senior generalist or leadership experience
- Experience building or substantially growing a People & Culture function, particularly within a scaling business
- Strong working knowledge of the Fair Work Act, Modern Awards and employee relations
- Demonstrated experience building practical performance, leadership development and employee engagement frameworks
- Experience working across a mixed blue- and white-collar workforce
- Construction, civil, landscaping or similar operational industry experience will be highly regarded
- The confidence to challenge directly while caring personally – whether you're dealing with an apprentice, supervisor, Project Manager or Director
- A practical, hands-on approach and the ability to operate in a fast-moving environment
- Relevant tertiary qualifications, with AHRI membership well regarded
What We Offer
This is an opportunity to build something significant.
You'll receive
- An Executive Leadership Group position reporting directly to the General Manager
- Genuine influence over the future direction of GWL
- The mandate and leadership backing to build the People & Culture division properly
- A strong existing culture to build on – not one you're being brought in to fix
- The opportunity to build your own P&C; team as the business grows
- Long-term career opportunity within a growing Western Sydney business
- A flexible, outcomes-focused working environment, including the ability to work from home 1–2 days per week
- Competitive salary package of $180,000–$200,000 + superannuation
The role will primarily be based at our Badgerys Creek head office in Western Sydney, close to the new Western Sydney Airport.
How to Apply
If you're an experienced People & Culture leader who wants the chance to build a function rather than simply inherit one, we'd like to hear from you. Apply through SEEK with your CV and a short cover note answering:
Tell us about a time you built or significantly improved a People & Culture function in a growing business. What did you prioritise, what did you change, and what was the impact?
Applications will be treated in confidence.
