Help shape a people-focused workplace where culture, fairness and support matter. The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is seeking an experienced and detail-focused HR Advisor to join our Human Resources team.

This role provides trusted HR advisory support across employee relations, award interpretation, employee lifecycle processes, workplace health and safety, and HR systems.

About VALS The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) and the state's only specialist legal and support service dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Established in 1973, VALS provides culturally safe legal advice and representation across criminal, family, civil and human rights law, youth justice and specialist litigation. Our broader services include a 24/7 Custody Notification Service, family violence programs, transitional housing support, client services and community legal education.

Our work is grounded in self-determination, cultural safety and creating better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

About the Role

As our HR Advisor, you will play an important role in ensuring VALS' people practices are consistent, compliant and supportive.

Working within a collaborative HR team, you will be a key point of contact for managers and employees seeking advice on employment conditions, classifications, policies and HR processes.





You will support the delivery of quality HR services across the employee lifecycle, while contributing to employee relations matters, industrial relations activities, workplace health and safety compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.

In this role you will:

- Provide practical HR advice to managers and employees on employment conditions, policies, procedures and HR processes.
- Interpret and apply the SCHADS Award, VALS Enterprise Agreement and relevant employment legislation.
- Support employee relations matters, including performance, grievances, investigations and other workplace issues.
- Assist with industrial relations matters, including union correspondence, consultation processes and Enterprise Agreement activities.
- Prepare accurate HR documentation, correspondence, case notes and employee records.
- Support classification reviews and the consistent application of employment conditions.
- Manage and maintain accurate employee records, contracts and HR information systems.
- Support onboarding, offboarding and other employee lifecycle processes.
- Assist with workplace health and safety documentation, reporting, registers and compliance activities.
- Prepare HR reports and workforce information for leadership.
- Contribute to the review and improvement of HR processes, templates, systems and ways of working.

About You You are an organised and approachable HR professional who enjoys providing practical advice and supporting positive employee experiences.

You will bring





- Experience in HR advisory, HR coordination or HR administration within a professional or community-based environment.
- Working knowledge of the SCHADS Award, Enterprise Agreements and Fair Work obligations.
- Experience supporting employee relations processes and workplace matters.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
- Confidence interpreting policies, procedures and employment conditions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with employees and managers.
- Experience using HR information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- A commitment to inclusive, culturally respectful and people-centred HR practices.

Mandatory Requirements To be successful, you will need:

- Tertiary qualifications in Human Resources, Business or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- A current Employee Working with Children Check.
- A current Victorian Driver Licence.
- The ability to obtain a National Criminal History Check.
- Full Australian work rights.
