ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking a person with a demonstrated understanding of human rights and issue-based advocacy. The successful candidate will be confident working with people from diverse backgrounds and able to work with a high level of autonomy. Experience and understanding of the issues affecting people with disability, including people with mental health conditions, as well as their families and carers, is essential.
PWdWA’s Individual Advocate will provide information and individual advocacy and assess appropriate referral options. The position will be part of a small team of Individual Advocates and will contribute to PWdWA’s broader systemic advocacy work.
People with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Lived experience of disability will be highly regarded.
ABOUT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES WA
Since 1981, PWdWA has been Western Australia’s leading member-based disability advocacy organisation, representing the rights, needs and interests of people with disability across the state. We provide information and independent individual and systemic advocacy, with a focus on people who are most vulnerable.
PWdWA is run by and for people with disabilities and aims to empower the voices of all people with disabilities in Western Australia.
CAPABILITY PROFILE
Education/Training/Qualifications (or equivalent experience):
- A tertiary or TAFE qualification in a relevant discipline, or equivalent demonstrated long-term experience.
KEY CRITERIA
- Demonstrated understanding of human rights legislation, standards, policy and resources relevant to the disability sector.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of disability services and the issues affecting people with disability.
- Demonstrated understanding of advocacy and conflict of interest.
- Ability to communicate, consult and plan appropriately and respectfully alongside people with disability and promote self-advocacy.
- Ability to organise and maintain a confidential database and keep up to date records with an outcomes focus.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, planning and organisational skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities while working both autonomously and as part of a team.
DESIRABLE
- Knowledge of and experience with the National Disability Insurance Scheme would be an advantage.
- Personal experience of disability would be highly regarded.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS The successful candidate must have or be willing to obtain a Working with Children Check and a National Police Certificate. WORKING ARRANGEMENTS The role will primarily be performed from home, with client meetings held at appropriate external locations. The successful candidate may also attend community events from time to time to promote PWdWA’s services and raise awareness of human rights and disability advocacy.
This role will be supported by the Advocacy Services Manager, and the successful candidate will work with a wider team of individual and systemic advocates via Microsoft Teams.
EMPLOYMENT TERMS
This role is offered on a part-time, fixed-term contract until 30 June 2027. It will initially comprise 30 hours per fortnight, which can be worked flexibly by agreement with the line manager. Additional hours and an extension of the contract may be available, subject to funding.
