Applications are invited for the full-time ongoing Media, Communications and Social Media Officer in the Office of Senator Marielle Smith, based in the Senator’s Electorate office in Adelaide, South Australia.
Senator Smith is the Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Women’s Health, the Senate Employment and Education Legislation Committee and the Joint Standing Committee on Trade and Investment Growth.
This is an exciting opportunity for a creative, organised and politically aware communications professional to join a dynamic federal Senate office and to support Senator Smith’s work.
The Office is seeking a dedicated, passionate, and qualified media, digital and communications specialist who will have responsibility for developing media strategy, digital campaigning and communication and engagement with traditional media outlets.
The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong digital content creation capabilities, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:
- Creating high-quality content including media releases, speeches, newsletters, website content, social media posts, videos and stakeholder communications.
- Managing the Senator’s social media channels, website and digital presence, ensuring content is timely, engaging and accurate.
- Responding to media enquiries and coordinate media opportunities, interviews and community engagement activities.
- Providing strategic communications advice on local issues, campaigns, announcements and constituent engagement.
- Monitoring media coverage, community sentiment and digital analytics,
preparing reports and briefing materials as required.
- Providing advice to the Senator on media strategy and engagement.
- Work outside of standard business hours, including some weekends, and travel to Canberra and within the electorate with the Senator will be required as part of this role.
- Other duties as required to support the Senator and the effective operation of the Electorate Office.
The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications and experience:
- Academic qualifications in relevant disciplines such as media, communications or design are desirable but not essential.
- Experience working in media, social justice, government or a related field.
- Experience working in politics, while not a requirement, is highly regarded.
- A firm understanding of media relations and digital media strategies.
- An understanding of Australia’s political landscape, parliamentary processes and the role of government.
- The ability to engage and communicate with a broad range of people.
- The experience and temperament to work with a small team to deliver on competing priorities while operating under time constraints and strict deadlines.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Employment conditions: The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:
- A commencing salary between $79,525and $92,846 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
- An additional optional allowance of up to $33,615 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and any travel requirements.
- Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
- An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

- Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
