At the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU), we have a new Strategy and Blueprint for Action with ambitious, high-impact, member-led campaigns at the centre. We are looking for a National Senior Political and Policy Officer to join our team and play a leading role, working closely with the leadership of the union, to deliver on the policy agenda at the core of our vision. We are looking for someone with political intelligence who can deliver strategic advice to progress our campaigns for industrial rights, secure jobs, a living wage, housing justice and economic sovereignty.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) is a progressive trade Union dedicated to advancing the rights and wellbeing of manufacturing workers and their communities. AMWU members work in the metals trades, printing, paper industry, vehicle industry, food and confectionery industry as well as technical trades and professions.

About the Role n

In this role, you will:

n

n
- Identify opportunities to develop and progress the policy issues covered in our Blueprint for Action
n
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to develop policy details
n
- Manage relationships with stakeholders, including political relationships with key government officers and departments
n
- Assess and provide advice on requests and invitations to participate in policy consultations, including making submissions
n
- Complete written submissions and papers as required
n
- Provide research to support a broad range of activities supporting our organising, bargaining and campaigning work
n

n

This role will require interstate travel from time to time.

n

We highly value experience in a union or membership organisation, but please apply if your experience has developed elsewhere and you’re able to demonstrate how your skills are transferable.

RESPONSIBILITIES n

n
- Strategy Implementation : Drive the development and execution of integrated strategies to advance policy priorities.
n
- Strategic Advice : Provide high-level strategic guidance to the national leadership team,



including creating discussion papers and policy recommendations.
n
- Stakeholder Relationship Management : Build and maintain strong relationships with unions, peak bodies, and government representatives.
n
- Policy Oversight : Oversee the development of submissions to government inquiries and union policy positions.
n
- Presentation Delivery : Create and deliver presentations to a wide range of stakeholders, including at AMWU forums.

- Competitive salary at officer level 7or 8 of our salary structure depending on skills and experience ($127,794.90 – $139,658.95)

Selection Criteria Essential nn
- Demonstrated commitment to union values and principles
n
- Tertiary qualification in public policy or equivalent experience
n
- Strong knowledge and experience working in policy analysis and policy development
n
- Demonstrated ability to deliver results working to deadlines, under minimal supervision and managing multiple tasks and stakeholders
n
- Excellent communication skills including written and oral communication, for a wide range of audiences and formats
n
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and with diverse stakeholders
n
