Position Objective

The Preparatory School STEM Teacher is responsible for designing and delivering engaging, high-quality STEM learning experiences that develop students’ curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and capability to apply knowledge in authentic contexts. Working under the direction of the Deputy Head of Preparatory School –

Adventurous Learning, the STEM Teacher will contribute to a coherent Prep School STEM program that connects curriculum learning with inquiry, innovation, design thinking, digital technologies and real-world experiences.

Key Responsibilities

 Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality STEM learning experiences across the Preparatory School,

aligned with the Australian Curriculum and Westminster’s curriculum priorities.

 Develop engaging, hands-on and inquiry-based learning experiences that integrate Science,

Technologies, Mathematics and relevant aspects of Engineering and design.

 Use authentic contexts, problems and projects to support students to investigate, design, create,

test, evaluate and refine solutions.

 Develop students’ capability in computational thinking, digital technologies, coding, robotics and other appropriate STEM tools and technologies.

 Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to identify opportunities for STEM learning to connect with classroom programs, inquiry units and broader Westminster Signature Experiences.

 Contribute to the development of STEM and innovation initiatives, competitions, challenges,

showcases and special programs across the Preparatory School.

 Support the implementation of adventurous and experiential learning opportunities, including links with the School’s agriculture, industry, tertiary and community partnerships where appropriate.





 Plan and facilitate learning experiences that promote the Westminster Capability Compass and develop students as curious, creative, resilient and capable learners.

 Differentiate STEM learning to meet the diverse learning needs of students and provide appropriate challenge and extension opportunities.

 Assess and monitor student learning through diagnostic, formative and summative approaches,

using evidence to inform teaching and provide meaningful feedback.

 Maintain appropriate records of student learning and contribute to reporting processes in accordance with Preparatory School expectations.

 Collaborate with the Deputy Head of Preparatory School – Adventurous Learning and relevant teaching staff to evaluate the effectiveness of STEM programs and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

 Contribute to the development, organisation and maintenance of STEM learning environments,

equipment, resources and displays, including supporting the effective use of the new Preparatory

School facilities.

 Ensure appropriate risk management, WHS procedures and supervision requirements are followed for practical, technological and project-based learning.

 Participate in relevant professional learning and contribute to a culture of professional inquiry,

collaboration and innovation.

 Contribute to the Pastoral Care program, co-curricular program, camps, excursions, incursions and other School activities as required.

 Promote and showcase student learning and achievement in STEM to the School community through appropriate exhibitions, events, communications and other platforms.

 Undertake other duties as required by the Head of Preparatory School or Principal, commensurate with the position.

Key Areas of Responsibility

 All teaching staff are expected to contribute to the Pastoral Care program and support the Uniting

Church ethos.

 All teaching staff are expected to contribute to the co-curricular program of the School.

 All teaching staff are expected to support a protected, inclusive and positive learning environment in which students are encouraged to be brave, humble, kind, authentic, resilient and curious.

 Other duties, as required by the Head of Preparatory School and Principal, commensurate with the position.

Key Selection Criteria: Qualifications, Skills and Experience

 Relevant tertiary teaching qualifications and current or eligible registration with the Teachers

Registration Board of South Australia.

 Demonstrated experience teaching STEM, Science and/or Technologies within a primary/Preparatory School setting.





 Demonstrated understanding of contemporary primary pedagogy and the educational needs of students from Early Learning through to Year 6.

 Demonstrated ability to design and deliver engaging, hands-on and inquiry-based STEM learning experiences.

 Demonstrated experience or capability in using digital technologies, coding, robotics, design processes and/or other STEM tools to enhance student learning.

 Sound knowledge of relevant Australian Curriculum content and an ability to make meaningful connections across learning areas.

 Demonstrated ability to differentiate learning and provide appropriate support, extension and challenge for a diverse range of learners.

 Experience using assessment and feedback to monitor student progress and inform teaching practice.

 Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with classroom teachers and specialist staff to develop coherent learning programs.

 Demonstrated commitment to student wellbeing, inclusion and the development of the whole child.

 Experience or willingness to contribute to STEM competitions, showcases, industry partnerships,

excursions, incursions or other authentic learning experiences would be advantageous.

Safety & Wellbeing

 Take reasonable care of, and cooperate with actions taken to protect, the health and safety of both themselves and others.

 Report all accidents, incidents and hazards to their supervisors as soon as is practicable.

 Be familiar with and abide by all WHS policies, risk management procedures and relevant School procedures.

 Ensure practical, technological and project-based STEM learning is appropriately planned,

supervised and risk assessed.

Conditions of Employment

 All applicants must be eligible to work in Australia.

 Teachers must have (or be eligible to obtain) current registration with the Teachers Registration

Board of South Australia.

 All staff must satisfy child protection screening and adhere to Westminster’s Child Safety and

Wellbeing policy, including holding a current Working with Children Clearance.

 All teaching staff must have completed current Provide First Aid training.

 A 6-month probationary period applies to all teaching positions and positions of responsibility.
