Primary objective

Undertake research and analysis of complex economic, forecasting, econometric modelling, statistical and demographic issues relevant to the Northern Territory.

Context statement

As a Principal Analyst in the Economic Analysis team, you will contribute to the provision of evidence–based advice analysing the performance of the Territory economy. You will lead quantitative modelling and forecasting projects, providing advice on developments in key macroeconomic indicators. You will work with other business units in Treasury and may lead DTF’s collaboration with government agencies on projects concerned with economic analysis, revenue analysis and forecasting,

statistical coordination, and demography.

Key duties and responsibilities

- Undertake independent research, investigation, and analysis of quantitative economic, statistical,



revenue, and demographic issues relevant to the Northern Territory.
- Lead the preparation of high-quality reports for public release, briefing notes, correspondence, and submissions.
- Provide high-level advice on current economic, statistical, and demographic issues likely to affect the Northern Territory economy.
- Foster effective professional and working relationships in Treasury and across government, including by representing and promoting the interests of Treasury and the Territory on interdepartmental forums and intergovernmental committees on economic, revenue, statistical and demography issues.
- Undertake data collection, analysis, visualisation, and reporting as directed.
- Build econometric forecasting models and produce forecasts for a range of key economic and revenue indicators.

Selection criteria

Essential

- Demonstrated experience and skills in applied economics and econometrics, a thorough understanding of economic analysis techniques and policy issues relevant to the Northern Territory, or similar economies.
- Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate technical work to a general audience.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills, ability to lead team projects, including supervision and mentoring of junior staff.
- Robust conceptual and problem-solving skills and the ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated analytical, advisory, quantitative research, knowledge management, and negotiation skills.
- An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

Desirable

- Tertiary qualifications in the fields of economics, commerce, business, or law.
- Familiarity with statistical software (e.g. Excel, EViews, R-studio and coding in R, Power BI, Tableau).
