Design & Engineering Lead – Fabrication & Delivery

Bishopp Billboard Constructions is our in-house construction and technical delivery business. We design, fabricate, build, maintain and upgrade billboard structures across a growing national network.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Design & Engineering Lead to join our Design & Procurement team.

We are deliberately keeping the background for this role broad.

You might come from mechanical design, product design, manufacturing, structural or steel fabrication, engineering drafting, automation, machinery or another technical environment where you have taken ideas from concept through design and into manufacture or installation.

What matters is that you can take a practical problem, develop a workable technical solution, coordinate the people needed to get it designed and engineered, understand what it is going to cost and help move it through fabrication into construction.

This is not simply a drafting role and it is not a purely managerial position. We are looking for someone who enjoys being technically involved while also being capable of leading work, coordinating others and improving the way the design process operates.

You will work closely with our Design & Procurement Manager and have the opportunity to take ownership of an increasing portion of our design and estimating workload.

What You’ll Be Doing

Your work will include:

- Taking allocated projects from initial scope through concept, design, engineering, fabrication and construction-ready handover
- Developing practical design concepts and helping determine the best way to manufacture and install them
- Producing and reviewing 3D models, drawings, specifications and bills of materials
- Preparing preliminary estimates and working with suppliers to establish material and fabrication costs
- Coordinating external engineers, draftspeople,



fabricators and specialist suppliers
- Providing direction and technical review to offshore drafting and design resources
- Managing drawing revisions, BOMs, technical documentation and controlled design information
- Reviewing designs for manufacturability, fabrication efficiency, installation and cost
- Working with fabricators to resolve production questions and ensure designs translate properly into finished components
- Working with our Delivery and Build teams so site access, lifting, installation and construction requirements are considered during design
- Troubleshooting technical issues as projects move through fabrication and construction
- Identifying opportunities to standardise designs, reduce rework and improve design-to-fabrication workflow
- Helping improve our CAD, document-control and design-management systems as the business grows

What We’re Looking For

There is no single career path we are looking for.

You may be a Design Engineer, Mechanical Designer, Manufacturing Engineer, Product Designer, Senior Draftsperson, Project Engineer, fabrication specialist or technical leader looking for broader ownership.

We would like to hear from people with:

- Strong practical design capability and experience taking technical work from concept toward manufacture, fabrication or installation
- Valuable 3D CAD capability using SolidWorks, Inventor, Onshape or similar
- Experience producing or reviewing detailed technical and manufacturing drawings
- A practical understanding of how things are manufactured, assembled and installed
- The ability to interpret engineering drawings and work effectively with consulting engineers
- Experience coordinating suppliers, manufacturers, engineers or other technical resources
- An understanding of costs, BOMs, estimates, quotations or project budgets
- Good planning skills and the ability to manage several pieces of work at the same time




- Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in making designs and processes simpler and more repeatable
- The confidence to take ownership while knowing when a complex technical issue needs to be escalated
- Full working rights in Australia

Experience That Would Be Useful

Any of the following would be well regarded, but we do not expect candidates to have all of them:

- Manufacturing or fabrication
- Steel structures or construction
- Design for manufacture or assembly
- SolidWorks PDM or another design/document-control system
- BOM and revision management
- FEA, prototyping or technical validation
- Lean Manufacturing, Kanban, 5S or other continuous-improvement methods
- Leading or mentoring designers or draftspeople
- Managing offshore or external drafting resources
- Working across design, manufacture and installation
