About Freedom Solutions
Freedom Solutions Australia operates across NSW and Victoria. We are a volunteer-based, not for profit organisation providing assistive technology solutions for people with disability and older people.
For over 50 years we have been a valued stakeholder in the disability services sector, enabling our clients to achieve their goals through:
· The design and construction of custom assistive technology otherwise commercially unavailable;
· Modification of commercially available equipment to suit clients’ individual needs;
· The Freedom Wheels customised Bike Service;
· Provision of specialised technical advice to clients.
Our Purpose
Freedom Solutions changes the lives of people with disability by providing personalised technology, equipment and services.
Position Purpose The purpose of this role is to lead and deliver Freedom Solutions Australia’s - Co-Designing Inclusive Futures: Women with Disability in Assistive Technology project.
The Project Lead will manage the budget, facilitate lived experience-led co-design, coordinate university engagement, supervise interns, work collaboratively with volunteers, support prototype development and undertake project evaluation and reporting.
The role will work closely with women with disability, university partners, students, volunteers, interns and FSA personnel to support inclusive assistive technology design and achieve the outcomes and participation targets of the funded project.
Key accountabilities
Project Delivery
· Lead the day-to-day delivery of Co-Designing Inclusive Futures: Women with Disability in Assistive Technology.
· Develop and maintain the project plan, delivery schedule, risk register and milestone reporting.
· Coordinate project activities across FSA’s Northmead site and partner universities.
· Ensure delivery meets funding commitments, approved outcomes, timelines and participant targets.
Lived Experience Co-Design
· Recruit and engage women with disability as paid lived experience contributors.
· Facilitate accessible co-design sessions online and at Northmead.
· Work collaboratively with participants to identify unmet equipment needs and develop clear assistive technology design briefs.
· Coordinate accessibility adjustments, participant payments, consent and feedback processes.
University Engagement
· Maintain and expand relationships with university partners, academics and unit coordinators.
· Coordinate and attend university classes, including in-person attendance as required, to engage with students and introduce FSA, assistive technology and lived experience-led co-design approaches.
· Deliver design briefs, respond to student questions and provide ongoing feedback and guidance throughout each university unit.
· Coordinate student presentations, design reviews and visits to FSA’s Northmead workshop.
· Track participation and support achievement of the funded project participation target of approximately 750 female students.
Internships and Volunteers
· Coordinate the recruitment, onboarding and supervision of six (two per semester)
paid 168-hour internships.
· Work alongside FSA’s existing volunteers to support student projects, technical review and prototype development.
· Support recruitment and onboarding initiatives to achieve the funded project target of at least 25 new women volunteers.
· Coordinate and support volunteer and intern involvement within established workshop practices and safety requirements.
Prototype Development Support
· Coordinate the progression of suitable student concepts into practical prototype development.
· Work collaboratively with volunteers, workshop personnel and lived experience contributors to review the feasibility, functionality, and safety of assistive technology designs and prototypes.
· Schedule workshop activities, materials, testing and design refinement.
· Maintain records of design decisions, participant feedback and prototype outcomes.
Budget and Administration
· Manage the approved project budget, expenditure, forecasts and supporting records.
· Monitor project costs, including staffing, travel, participant payments, materials, internships and university engagement.
· Record and reconcile expenditure and prepare grant acquittal information.
· Identify budget pressures, delivery risks and required variations for management review.
Evaluation and Reporting
· Implement project evaluation tools, participant surveys and data collection processes.
· Maintain accurate records of students, lived experience contributors, interns, volunteers, university partners and project outputs.
· Measure changes in knowledge, confidence, inclusive design skills, participation and workforce readiness.
· Prepare milestone reports, governance updates and final project reporting.
Communications and Showcasing
· Work with external providers to document and publicly showcase women-led co-design outcomes.
· Identify suitable participant stories, project achievements and sector learning.
· Ensure separate consent is obtained for photographs, video, quotations and public communications.
· Support events, presentations and project publications promoting women with disability as leaders in assistive technology innovation.
Quality, Health and Safety
· Follow quality assurance and Work Health and Safety practices.
· Support and maintain internal systems that improve safety, quality, and compliance.
Other
· Complete other project-related duties required to support successful delivery of the funded program.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
· A relevant qualification in STEM, allied health, disability, education, community development, project management or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
· Experience delivering projects or programs involving multiple stakeholders, budgets, timelines and reporting.
· Experience engaging people, facilitating groups or presenting information to varied audiences.
· Demonstrated understanding of lived experience-led practice and the ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with people with disability.
· A practical understanding of assistive technology, inclusive design or disability practice.
Desirable
· Personal lived experience of disability and the ability to draw on that experience appropriately in the context of the role.
· Experience in disability, allied health, STEM, education, community development or the not-for-profit sector.
· Experience engaging university students, interns, volunteers or community participants.
· Exposure to co-design, assistive technology, inclusive design, product development or prototyping.
· Experience with funded project evaluation, reporting or grant acquittal.
· Applicants are not expected to meet every desirable criterion. We welcome transferable experience gained through professional, community, volunteer, caring and lived experience.

· Comply with FSA policies, procedures, organisational goals and values, and work in a manner that supports the health and safety of employees, volunteers, contractors, visitors and members of the public.
· All staff are required to obtain and maintain a valid Working with Children's Check and a NDIS Worker Screening Check as a condition of commencing employment.
· The position is based at FSA's Northmead office, with in office parking available, and requires attendance at partner universities and other project locations. FSA welcomes discussion about reasonable workplace adjustments to support employees to perform the inherent requirements of the role.
· This is a grant-funded position offered on a fixed term contract until 21 December 2029.
