Electrical Design Engineer – Protection & Metering

High Voltage Transmission | Secondary Systems | Sydney

This is an opportunity for an Electrical Engineer with high-voltage protection design experience to join a major Australian electricity transmission network and work across a significant pipeline of critical infrastructure projects.

We are looking for engineers from established Design Engineer through to experienced Intermediate level , with practical experience designing protection and secondary systems for high-voltage substations.

You could currently be working within a transmission or distribution utility, engineering consultancy, EPC contractor, renewable energy developer, generation business or major electrical infrastructure setting.

The opportunity

Working as part of an established secondary systems engineering team, you will contribute to the design and delivery of protection and metering systems across new connections, network upgrades, asset replacement, remediation and major transmission projects.

Depending on your level of experience, you could be producing designs with support from senior engineers or taking greater ownership of complete design packages, technical interfaces and engineering deliverables.

The role can include:

- HV substation protection and metering design
- Protection schemes for transmission and connection projects
- Protection philosophies, schematics and engineering calculations
- Numerical protection relay selection, configuration and settings
- Power system analysis associated with HV protection
- New customer connections and modifications to existing network assets
- Network augmentation, remediation and asset replacement projects
- Preparation of technical specifications and design documentation
- Supporting commissioning teams and resolving site-based technical issues
- Fault investigations and technical analysis
- Working with multidisciplinary design, construction and commissioning teams





For more experienced engineers, there is also the opportunity to take ownership of larger design packages, review engineering work, coordinate external consultants, guide developing engineers and contribute to engineering standards and technical improvements.

About you

You will ideally hold a degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent and have practical experience in high-voltage protection or secondary systems design . We are particularly interested in engineers who have worked across transmission, distribution, generation, renewables, substations or major electrical infrastructure.

You do not need to already be a design approver, technical authority or standards owner. Likewise, candidates coming from commissioning or testing backgrounds can be considered where they can demonstrate genuine engineering design experience alongside their site exposure.

The key requirement is a solid technical foundation in HV protection design and the ability to continue developing within a highly experienced engineering environment.
