Mission Data (MD) Division within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities.

The AI Engineering team in MD builds and deploys production AI systems at scale. They work with data scientists and other engineers to develop cutting-edge machine learning systems.

Key Duties:

ASD 4 & 5

- Under direction deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot AI models.
- Under direction develop and maintain ASD’s in-house Enterprise MLOps Platform.
- Provide support to a range of users including assisting other engineers to integrate with our services.
- Work with data scientists developing ML models to ensure they are sufficiently performant and stable for production.

ASD 6

- Independently deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot AI models.
- Independently develop and maintain ASD’s in-house Enterprise MLOps Platform.
- Lead team lines of effort including the design of technical systems and supervision of junior staff.
- Lead engagements with other engineering teams seeking to integrate with our enterprise AI services.
- Review and optimise production ML code.

- Rapidly familiarise themselves with complex technical environments.
- Perform critical and complex engineering activities on production systems under time pressure.
- Effectively design, assess and prototype technical solutions using a mix of open-source and in-house technology stacks.
- Concurrently manage multiple support tasks with dynamic priorities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment with ASD, you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

- Australian Citizenship - Applicants must be an Australian citizen. Only in exceptional circumstances can this requirement be waivered.
- Organisational Suitability Assessment - The preferred applicant will be required to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (see Organisational Assessment section).
- Security Clearance - It is a condition of employment that applicants are willing and able to obtain and maintain the requisite security clearance for the duration of their employment with ASD.
- Health Assessment - The preferred applicant may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the Agency’s preferred medical provider.

Notes

Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:

- Solid Python development skills and experience building production-grade applications, APIs, services or reusable engineering components.
- Containerised technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- MLOps tooling such as MLFlow, Ray, the VLLM Production Stack or NVIDIA Dynamo.
- Building DevOps pipelines with GitLab CI/CD or equivalent.
- Inference engineering optimising machine learning workloads with technologies such as Quantisation, Custom Multi-token Processors or Disaggregated Inference.
