About the team

The Property and Place Branch supports the department by providing safe, inclusive, functional and reliable workplaces across Australia. We partner with business areas to ensure facilities meet operational, safety and security requirements while supporting the department's science, research and corporate functions.

The Specialised Facilities Management team is responsible for managing complex scientific, laboratory and technical facilities within the department's property portfolio. We oversee facilities operations, maintenance programs, contractor performance, compliance activities and minor works projects to ensure facilities remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.

Our work supports critical science and research activities while enabling staff, visitors and partners to operate safely and effectively.

The opportunity

This is a hands‑on facilities role supporting the day‑to‑day operation of a portfolio of specialised scientific, laboratory and technical facilities.

Working closely with facilities staff, contractors and stakeholders, you will coordinate maintenance activities, monitor contractor performance and support compliance, safety and security requirements. You will play an important role in ensuring facilities remain safe, operational and fit for purpose while supporting a range of scientific, laboratory and corporate activities.

We are looking for a proactive and reliable team member who enjoys working in a practical operational environment and delivering quality services to site users.

You will be able to demonstrate:

- Experience coordinating operational, facilities, maintenance, logistics or similar activities.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build productive working relationships.
- A practical approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
- The ability to exercise sound judgement and take responsibility for completing work activities.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to safety, compliance and customer service.
- Experience working with contractors, service providers or external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.

Key duties of the position include:

- Coordinate day‑to‑day facilities activities across our facilities
- Coordinate contractor access, inductions and site activities.
- Monitor contractor performance and elevate issues where required.
- Coordinate maintenance requests and track activities through to completion.
- Conduct site inspections and identify safety, security or operational risks.
- Support site security processes, including access control and visitor management.
- Contribute to work health and safety, compliance and emergency management activities.
- Provide operational support to reception, stores and logistics functions when required.

Eligibility

Essential

- Current Australian Driver Licence
- Ability to regularly attend operational sites
- Forklift licence

Desirable

- Experience working within laboratory, research, technical, industrial or other highly serviced facilities

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Notes

This is a predominantly site‑based role supporting specialist facilities at Lindfield and North Ryde in Sydney.



Remote or working from home arrangements are generally not possible.

Regular attendance at operational sites is required to oversee facilities operations, maintenance activities, contractor performance and stakeholder engagement.

Travel between sites may be required.

Participation in an emergency call‑out roster may be required and will be remunerated in accordance with the provisions of the DISR Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027.

The role involves some safe manual handling tasks (eg furniture and equipment relocations).

Experience in facilities operations, maintenance, logistics, reception or customer service environments will be highly regarded.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
