The Role
The Assistant Director, Treasury plays a key leadership role in delivering the department’s treasury functions within a complex financial environment.
Reporting to the Director, Financial Reporting and Treasury, the role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day treasury operations while ensuring the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of financial transactions. The position exercises sound judgement by applying the Commonwealth financial framework and provides expert advice to support decision‑making.
The role also contributes to strengthening financial management practices, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and supporting the Director in delivering strategic treasury outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities
In this role, your responsibilities will include the following:
- Supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the Treasury unit.
- Managing the department’s appropriation management function, including the daily appropriation drawdowns, cash forecasting and banking.
- Manage monthly reconciliations, clearing accounts, undertake monthly review of relevant general ledger accounts.
- Provide high level specialist advice to the wider Departmental network on treasury, revenue, tax, receipting and reconciliation issues.
- Promote the continuous improvement of team processes and ensure they are compliant with relevant legislation and Government policies.
- Identify system improvements within the unit and liaise with the systems area to assist in implementation of system enhancements.
- Contributing to the department’s annual financial statements, including preparation of the high quality and comprehensive appropriation reconciliations and workpapers.
- Maintaining professional working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the Department of Finance and the Australian National Audit Office.
- Provide high-quality advice to the Director and stakeholders on treasury matters, financial risks and operational issues.
- Lead and coordinate process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, internal controls and compliance outcomes.
- Maintain oversight of treasury systems and processes (e.g. CBMS, RBANet, SAP or similar FMIS), including identifying opportunities for optimisation.
- Ensure accurate and timely management of Treasury communications, including shared mailboxes and stakeholder enquiries.
- Develop and maintain transparent, fit‑for‑purpose process documentation and operational guidance
- Build and sustain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, influencing outcomes where required.

Eligibility
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department, you must be an Australian Citizen or, in limited circumstances, in the process of obtaining it.
Security Clearance - our successful candidate is required to hold, or have the ability to obtain, and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
