Senior AccountantAbout us
Hodges Accounting & Advisory is a West Perth-based accounting and advisory firm working predominantly with privately owned and family businesses.
Our clients typically have enough scale or complexity to need more than annual compliance. Some have an internal Finance Manager, accountant or bookkeeping function; others rely more heavily on us. In either case, our role is to ensure the numbers are reliable, help clients understand what they mean, and support better decisions around cash flow, tax, structure, growth, ownership, and long-term planning.
We are heavily invested in cloud-based accounting and finance systems, with a growing focus on how AI can improve workflow, reporting and the usefulness of financial information. We use technology to streamline processes, integrate systems and give clients a clearer, more complete view of their business.
Our role often extends beyond accounting. We work closely with business owners and their broader adviser networks, including lawyers, financial advisers and finance brokers, and often help coordinate the moving parts around bigger business decisions.
We take the work seriously, but not ourselves. Hodges is a relaxed, social team and we want people to enjoy coming to work. We trust people to get the job done without obsessing over chargeable-hour targets or unnecessary internal bureaucracy, and we offer regular opportunities to get out of the office through client events, team functions, and social catch-ups.
As the firm grows, we are building greater depth in the team so our directors can remain focused on senior client advice, oversight and business development while maintaining strong delivery capability underneath them.
The role
We are looking for a Senior Accountant with approximately four to five years’ experience in Australian public practice to join the team full-time in West Perth.
This is a hands-on, client-facing role across both compliance and advisory work. You will work directly with business owners, manage work across a portfolio of privately owned businesses and take responsibility for high-quality financial and tax reporting. You will also support the directors in delivering ongoing advice around forecasting, modelling, tax planning, business structure and longer-term strategy.
You can draw on our offshore team for appropriate compliance and processing work, allowing you to focus more on client relationships, higher-value work, and developing your advisory capability.
The role suits someone who is technically solid, commercially minded, and ready to take more ownership of client work rather than simply preparing accounts and tax returns.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and review financial statements, income tax returns, BAS and related compliance work for companies, trusts, partnerships and individuals.
- Manage year-end and periodic reporting requirements across a portfolio of business clients.
- Review reconciled financial information and identify issues, anomalies and matters requiring further analysis or senior input.
- Support cashflow forecasting, budgeting, financial modelling, projections and management reporting.
- Assist with tax planning, business structuring, ownership changes and other advisory matters.
- Work with client bookkeepers, accountants and Finance Managers to resolve issues and improve the quality and usefulness of financial information.
- Support improvements to accounting systems and processes, including Xero and related cloud-based platforms.
- Work with cloud and emerging AI-enabled tools to improve workflow, reporting and efficiency where appropriate.
- Review work prepared by junior and offshore team members and provide practical guidance and feedback.
- Manage client queries and maintain strong day-to-day client relationships.
- Work closely with the directors on larger or more complex client matters.
- Liaise with other professional advisers where required, including lawyers, financial advisers and finance brokers.
- Contribute to workflow, quality control and continuous improvement across the practice.
About you
You will ideally have
- Around four to five years’ experience in Australian public practice accounting.
- Strong technical capability across business services, financial reporting and tax compliance.
- Experience working with privately owned businesses and SME clients.
- Sound knowledge of Australian income tax, GST/BAS and relevant accounting requirements.
- Strong Xero capability and confidence working across cloud accounting and related finance systems.
- Good Excel skills and the ability to work with financial data beyond basic compliance preparation.
- An interest in how cloud technology and AI can improve accounting workflows, reporting and client outcomes.
- Experience reviewing work and supporting junior team members.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the confidence to deal directly with clients.
- The ability to understand the commercial context behind the numbers and identify when something requires further analysis or advice.
- Strong organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage competing deadlines.
- A relevant accounting or finance degree.
- CA or CPA qualification, or substantial progress toward completion.
What we are looking for Technical competence matters, but so does judgement. We want someone who wants to understand the client’s business, not simply complete the file. You should be comfortable asking questions, spotting inconsistencies or opportunities in the numbers, and working with senior team members to turn financial information into useful advice.
You do not need to bring a client base, and we don't have business development KPIs, however, a can-do attitude towards building relationships and bringing business into the firm will be highly regarded. The opportunity is to become a trusted senior member of the delivery team, take increasing responsibility for client work and build deeper exposure to advisory engagements as the firm grows.
Just as importantly, we are looking for someone who will fit into the team. We are professional without being overly formal, collaborative without being bureaucratic, and we value people who can do good work, communicate well and enjoy themselves along the way.
Why Hodges
- Work directly with business owners and established privately owned and family businesses.
- Genuine exposure to advisory, forecasting and modelling alongside compliance.
- Direct access to experienced directors and senior client matters.
- Support from an established offshore team.
- A cloud-focused practice actively investing in better systems and emerging AI capability.
- Less emphasis on rigid chargeable-hour targets and internal bureaucracy.
- Regular client events and team social functions.
- A relaxed, practical culture where people are trusted to do good work.
- Opportunity to develop stronger commercial and advisory skills.
- A growing team with room to take on greater responsibility over time.
- West Perth location.
