Biologic is a Western Australian-owned biodiversity company, and we’re looking for an experienced Senior Aquatic Ecologist who wants to do technically meaningful work, lead with confidence and be part of a team that genuinely enjoys working and learning together.

You’ll contribute to diverse projects across WA alongside ecologists, zoologists, geneticists, botanists, restoration ecologists, geologists, modellers, impact assessment and GIS specialists. Combining field ecology, technical analysis, reporting and project delivery, you’ll have the backing of experienced Principals and the Manager of Aquatic Ecology, plus a collaborative multidisciplinary team that shares knowledge and celebrates success together.

About the role

This is a hands-on role where your expertise will make a visible difference. You’ll help shape aquatic ecology projects from early planning and survey design through to mobilisation, field delivery, data interpretation, reporting and client engagement.

You will

- Shape survey approaches and lead aquatic ecology field programs across Western Australia.
- Guide remote field teams and create a safe, well-organised working environment.
- Deliver baseline, monitoring, targeted survey and impact assessment projects that support informed environmental decisions.
- Take ownership of small to medium-sized projects, balancing schedules, budgets, client communication, sample traceability and delivery commitments.
- Undertake aquatic habitat assessments and sampling programs across water and sediment quality, wetland flora, aquatic invertebrates, hyporheic fauna, fish, turtles and waterbirds.
- Use contemporary field techniques, including electrofishing and eDNA, and recognise when molecular analysis can strengthen an investigation.
- Identify freshwater fish, crayfish and turtles in the field.
- Complete laboratory identification of aquatic invertebrates using suitable taxonomic resources and coordinate further analysis where needed.
- Analyse ecological information using appropriate statistical tools and turn findings into clear, defensible conclusions.
- Prepare high-quality reports for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Plan mobilisations and coordinate permits, ethics requirements, milestones, subcontractors, equipment, laboratories and sampling workflows.
- Contribute to proposals, budgets, quality reviews and project planning, while helping the team meet timelines and client expectations.
- Share your experience, mentor developing ecologists and help build confidence and capability across the team.

About you

You’ll be a great fit if you’re an experienced aquatic ecologist who enjoys combining strong technical work with practical field leadership, project ownership and collaboration.

You will have

- A Bachelor degree in Zoology, Biological Science, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
- 5+ years' postgraduate experience in a relevant field.
- Strong applied knowledge of aquatic ecology, including survey design and aquatic invertebrate identification.
- Demonstrated experience designing and leading aquatic ecology field programs, including remote work and pre-mobilisation planning.
- Experience coordinating project logistics, people, resources and budgets for small to medium-sized projects.
- Strong ecological data analysis, interpretation and reporting skills, with the ability to communicate to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Knowledge of relevant WA and Commonwealth regulatory frameworks, environmental guidance and ethical sampling requirements.
- Working knowledge of the EPA's Inland Waters Environmental Factor and ANZG (2018) guidelines.
- A team-oriented approach, sound professional judgement and a willingness to support the development of others.
- Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- The ability to work independently while contributing positively to shared project and team outcomes.
- A current Class C open driver's licence (essential).
- 4WD experience is desirable.
