Position Title: Head of Environment and Sustainability

Directorate: Technical Services

Location: South of Perth, WA

Remuneration: Up to $200,000 base + Private Use Motor Vehicle + Up to 15% Superannuation

Reporting directly to the Executive Director Technical Services, the Head of Environment and Sustainability serves as the central strategist, operational lead, and technical authority for all environmental, sustainability, and waste management functions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership & Operational Excellence

- Provide high-level strategic direction and oversight for the Setting and Sustainability department, ensuring alignment with the City's Strategic Community Plan and Corporate Business Plan.
- Lead, mentor, and build capability across a multidisciplinary team spanning Environmental Coordination, Sustainability Projects, Resource Collection, and Resource Recovery.
- Translate broad organisational strategy into actionable operational plans, ensuring service delivery meets high standards of efficiency, quality, and community satisfaction.
- Act as an authoritative technical and strategic advisor to the CEO, Executive Director, and Council on environmental risk, policy, and statutory compliance.

2. Environmental Planning & Regulatory Compliance

- Oversee environmental assessment, monitoring, and compliance under the Environmental Protection Act and associated state and federal legislation.
- Lead natural capital protection strategies across 560 km² of diverse landscape, safeguarding threatened flora species and protected ecological communities.




- Embed robust environmental risk assessment frameworks early into corporate and infrastructure projects to eliminate harm and prevent regulatory non-compliance.

3. Sustainability, Carbon & Circular Economy Strategy

- Lead corporate Net Zero strategies, the Corporate Greenhouse Action Plan, and sustainable energy programs.
- Drive circular economy initiatives and progressive sustainability programs, encouraging community-wide behavioural change through initiatives such as Switch Your Thinking.
- Identify, secure, and manage external grant funding, state government partnerships, and industry opportunities to advance regional sustainability goals.

Essential Experience & Capabilities:

- Leadership Experience: Proven record leading environmental, sustainability, or waste services in a complex, regulated environment.
- Regulatory Compliance: Deep understanding of WA environmental legislation, statutory approval processes, and local government frameworks.
- Commercial & Operational Management: Capability in financial management, capital budget oversight, and high-value contract management.
- Stakeholder Influence: Strong communication skills with ability to advise senior executives, engage elected officials, and build strategic partnerships.

Education & Qualifications:

- Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Current C-Class WA Driver's Licence and ability to obtain a National Police Clearance.
