Primary objective
As part of the Legal Services unit, provide the CEO of NT Health, its divisions and regional health services with high quality legal services across areas of law relevant to the Department.
Context statement The Legal Services unit provides the Office of the CEO and the Department with legal advice and support in relation to a wide variety of legal matters including commercial agreements, administrative law, mental health,
public and environmental health,
coronial inquests, litigated matters, resolution of complaints and minor claims, and performs administrative functions in relation to
FOI and Privacy matters.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide direct support to the Director Legal Services in relation to the delivery of legal services relevant to the governance
and operations of NT Health.
1. Provide team leadership and management within Legal Services, fostering a positive workplace culture through exemplary
leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
1. Assist with carriage of legal matters, including claims against the NTA, coronial inquests, FOI and privacy, commercial matters
and management of outsourced matters.
1. Maintain a high level of knowledge and expertise in the relevant areas of the law, practices and procedures.
2. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly
and correctly, liaise with clients, deal with people and issues in a professional manner.
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
to ensure high quality,
safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as legal practitioner with eligibility to practise in the Northern Territory.
2. Demonstrated senior level skills, knowledge and experience (>5 years) relevant to the provision of diverse legal services
involving complex legal issues.
1. Demonstrated experience in providing positive, solution focused advice in a high volume environment, with diverse issues.
2. Demonstrated high level interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to develop and maintain effective professional
relationships with various stakeholders.
1. Exceptional practise management skills, including time management, record keeping and capacity to achieve outcomes within
set timeframes.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of government.
2. Specialist knowledge in at least one area within the discipline of Commercial Law relevant to Government.
3. Up to 5-10 years post admission legal practice experience in a relevant field.
