Primary objective

Under the direction of the Senior/ Chief District Ranger, lead a team to deliver land management, nature conservation, visitor activities and facilities management to support the delivery of targeted, high-quality park management outcomes, and provide support for Aboriginal and other stakeholder partnerships. Several vacancies are available in various locations throughout the Northern Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Lead and supervise a ranger team to deliver effective protected area management outcomes in accordance with park management

plans and operational priorities.
1. Ensure safe systems of work, including supervision, mentoring,



training and compliance with Work Health and Safety and risk

management requirements.
1. Coordinate and undertake field operations including fire, weed and feral animal management, visitor services, compliance and

infrastructure maintenance.
1. Support partnerships with Aboriginal Traditional Owners, joint management bodies and key stakeholders to achieve shared land and

sea country outcomes.
1. Respond to incidents and emergencies within protected areas, including first aid and multi‑agency support as required.
2. Operate vehicles, vessels, plant and equipment safely and competently in remote and challenging environments, and ensure equipment

is maintained in accordance with workplace and operational standards.
1. Undertake compliance and enforcement activities using delegated powers under relevant legislation.
2. Contribute to reporting, monitoring and continuous improvement of protected area management programs.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Significant relevant experience in a field of technical work closely related to the key duties, or a relevant qualification awarded by an

Australian institution, or equivalent.
1. Sound knowledge and understanding of natural and cultural resource management principles and the role of a ranger, incorporating

experience such as park and/or wildlife management,



fire and invasive species management, facilitating interpretive programs and other relevant plans and programs.
1. Demonstrated experience in effectively leading and motivating a small team, as well as working independently and with a strong safety

culture.
1. Demonstrated ability to plan, cost, and execute programs and projects within agreed timeframes and allocated resources.
2. Good verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to interact positively and effectively with staff, visitors and

stakeholders to promote effective and cooperative partnerships, and to act with confidentiality and discretion.
1. Knowledge and understanding of incident response procedures, including administering first aid.
2. Knowledge and understanding of regulatory frameworks and ability to perform powers and functions under applicable legislation,

including conducting compliance and enforcement duties.
1. Current NT driver’s licence, firearms licence and first aid certificate, or the ability to obtain within a short timeframe.

Desirable

1. Sound knowledge of vehicle, plant and equipment operation and maintenance, and relevant formal training such as chainsaw, chemical

application, 4WD recovery, firefighting, coxswains etc. Further information The role of a ranger is diverse. Rangers may be required to transfer to other parks and/or regions, work on weekends and public holidays,

be able to drive manual vehicles, work in physically demanding conditions and assist in incident management activities, including providing first aid. Most duties required of the position are conducted in the field.
