Primary objective The Senior Veterinary Officer manages the surveillance and planning component of the Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) preparedness and response program, within Livestock Biosecurity. The program aims to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergency animal diseases in order to maintain and enhance market access for livestock and livestock products going to both domestic and export markets.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Manage the planning, policy and surveillance, components of EAD Preparedness and Response within the Livestock Biosecurity Branch

of the Biosecurity and Animal Welfare Division.
1. Provide high level advice on biosecurity policy disease surveillance and disease control to the Chief Veterinary Officer, veterinary





officers and livestock biosecurity officers.
1. Provide advice to Government and industry on animal health and welfare issues relating to the livestock industries.
2. Represent the Northern Territory on national working groups and committees related to animal health and welfare.
3. Function as an inspector of Livestock under the Northern Territory Livestock Act, 2008 and other relevant Acts.
4. Participate in the emergency response to pests and diseases of livestock, plants and aquatic animals.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Relevant tertiary qualification in Veterinary Science and eligibility for registration in the Northern Territory.
2. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement policies in response to EAD incursions.
3. Demonstrated experience in the livestock industries preferably in pastoral zones, tropical and arid environments.
4. Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, review and report on livestock biosecurity projects.
5. Demonstrated high level of skills in gathering and analysis of technical data together with analytical and report writing skills.
6. Highly developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills to relate effectively to meet the needs of diverse audiences

as well as to effectively represent and advocate for the Territory in intersectoral contexts.
1. Self-motivated with initiative and judgement and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

1. Relevant postgraduate qualification and/or emergency animal disease response competency.
2. Policy and procedure development in the public sector with reference to Livestock Biosecurity.

Further information The successful applicant must have a driver’s licence and be willing and able to travel to interstate and intra-territory locations. Occasional field work may be required.
