Underwriting Consultant (Sydney or Melbourne)

The Underwriting Consultant is a member of the Products Team responsible for delivering underwriting support to third parties, customers and the business. The role engages across several lines within St Andrew's including the Claims and Customer Relations Team, Distribution Team and Actuarial Team. It provides an important link between the business and third parties. There is a strong focus on quality assurance and quality control designed to identify improvements in the underwriting function that will result in a more efficient decisioning process and ultimately improvement in customer experience – all within a tightly controlled legislative, regulatory and code of practice environment.

Key responsibilities

- Conduct underwriting assessments on life insurance applications in line with business rules, SLAs, underwriting engines and reinsurer delegation
- Facilitate effective communication internally and with third-party partners on underwriting rules and decisions
- Participate in underwriting rules reviews to ensure adherence to internal underwriting guidelines, policies and procedures
- Provide guidance on rules revisions to meet customer, third party partners and business objectives
- Collaborate and partner with cross functional areas associated with the risk selection process to create guidelines and processes that assist with achieving business outcomes
- Ensure all underwriting related material is properly maintained and consistent
- Handle complex cases independently and provide leadership on case reviews, ongoing training needs and knowledge sharing
- Lead or participate in broader cross-functional projects advising on upstream and downstream impacts of any proposed underwriting changes
- Assess and manage high-complexity cases independently
- Mentor team members on underwriting processes including developing content and facilitating training sessions where needed

About you





- 5 - 7 years experience in underwriting roles
- Proven track record of quality, productivity and increasing authority
- Detailed knowledge of relevant regulatory, legislative and code of practice obligations
- Understanding and experience with Insurance Contracts Act Life 1984, Life Insurance Act 1995 and Life Insurance Code of Practice
- Detailed knowledge of the life insurance industry, principles and practices
- Ability to deliver efficient, effective, customer centric and compliant underwriting solutions
- Strong business acumen and proven ability to detect emerging trends and develop appropriate responses
- Effective communication and negotiation abilities with high level of integrity and alignment with St Andrew's values
