Disability Support Worker – North Lakes, Brisbane
We are looking for a reliable, patient and attentive Support Worker to provide consistent one-to-one support to an adult participant in North Lakes.
This role would suit someone who understands that excellent support is not about taking over. It is about providing the right level of assistance while helping someone maintain their independence, dignity and sense of purpose.
Hours
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Friday
7:00 am – 4:00 pm
We are looking for someone who can provide ongoing consistency across these shifts.
About the Participant The participant is an intelligent and capable adult living with the effects of an acquired brain injury following a stroke.
His support needs include physical assistance, communication support, personal care, meal preparation, mobility assistance, household tasks and community access.
He experiences aphasia, which can make finding or communicating words difficult, along with some short-term memory challenges. His physical mobility and energy levels can also vary depending on pain and fatigue.
It is important that support workers understand that difficulty communicating does not reflect a lack of intelligence or understanding.
Patience, respect and giving him adequate time to communicate are essential.
What the Role Involves
You will provide support with:
- Personal care, dressing and grooming
- Showering and toileting assistance
- Mobility, transfers and falls prevention
- Meal preparation and mealtime supervision
- Encouraging regular fluids
- Household tasks including washing, dishes, vacuuming, mopping and general cleaning
- Transport and community access when appropriate
- Helping the participant complete everyday tasks himself wherever possible
- Providing companionship and meaningful engagement
- Completing clear handovers with family and other support workers
The participant has two small dogs who are very friendly. So you have to love dogs as they are part of their family. The participant has a mealtime management plan and requires attentive supervision while eating due to a choking risk.
You will also need to remain attentive to changes in mobility, fatigue, pain, skin integrity and general wellbeing.
Communication Matters
We are particularly looking for someone who communicates calmly and respectfully.
You will need to
- Use clear and concise language
- Give the participant time to find his words
- Avoid rushing to fill silences
- Provide gentle prompts when required
- Repeat or simplify questions when necessary
- Use yes or no questions when communication is particularly difficult
- Explain what you are doing and where you are going when moving around the home
Consistency and trust are extremely key in this role. Supporting Independence A major focus of the role is capacity building.
Rather than automatically doing things for the participant, we want someone who looks for safe opportunities to help him remain involved in everyday life.
Some days he will be capable of doing more than others. Brain injury,
pain and fatigue can significantly affect physical and cognitive energy.
We need someone who can observe how he is presenting that day and adjust the level of support accordingly.
The Person We’re Looking For
You will be someone who is:
- Patient and emotionally steady
- Is able to commit to the role
- Attentive and safety conscious
- Comfortable providing personal care
- Respectful of an adult participant’s independence and choices
- Able to follow established support and mealtime plans
- Reliable and consistent
- Willing to listen, learn and receive feedback
- Able to recognise when someone needs assistance without unnecessarily taking over
Experience supporting people with stroke, acquired brain injury, aphasia, mobility limitations or complex physical support needs would be highly regarded. A calm personality and genuine ability to build trust are more important than simply having years of experience.
Requirements
Applicants should have, or be willing to obtain where appropriate:
- NDIS Worker Screening Check
- Working with Children Check if required
- Current First Aid and CPR
- Current Australian driver licence
- Reliable vehicle and comprehensive insurance
- Relevant disability or community services qualifications are desirable but not essential for the right person
This is a role where consistency really matters. We are looking for someone who wants to get to know the person they support, understand how they communicate and become a trusted part of their support team. If this sounds like the type of support work you enjoy, we would love to hear from you.
Pay: $43.23 per hour
Work Location: On the road
