Queensland Worker Screening Services is seeking a highly motivated Senior Legal Officer / Senior Assessment Officer to join our Eligibility Assessment team. In this role, you will undertake the assessment of complex and high-profile screening applications and provide expert legal, policy and procedural advice relating to the screening provisions of the Working with Children Check Act 2000.

About The Role n

As a Senior Legal Officer / Senior Assessment Officer, you will apply your legislative expertise, analytical skills and professional judgment to assess complex matters and make recommendations regarding an individual's eligibility to hold a Blue Card.

You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, provide expert advice on legislative and policy matters, and contribute to decision-making that supports the safety and wellbeing of children and young people across Queensland.

Key Responsibilities In this role, you will: n

- Assess complex and high-profile employment screening applications under the Working with Children Check Act 2000.
n
- Undertake detailed risk assessments and apply legislative knowledge to support decisions in the best interests of children and young people.
n
- Analyse complex information and evidence,



identify information gaps and request additional material where required.
n
- Prepare high-quality recommendations regarding applicant eligibility, supported by detailed legislative reasoning.
n
- Effectively case manage files, ensuring appropriate prioritisation and timely outcomes.
n
- Prepare reports, submissions, correspondence, briefing materials and other documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
n
- Provide legal, policy, procedural and administrative advice on matters relating to Blue Card screening provisions.
n
- Support advocacy activities, including appearing on behalf of Blue Card Services when required.
n
- Conduct legal and policy research and maintain contemporary knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory developments.
n
- Build and maintain productive relationships with government agencies, partner organisations and other stakeholders.
n
- Respond to enquiries regarding legislative and procedural matters.
n
- Mentor and support Legal Officers and Paralegal Officers to build capability and knowledge across the team.
n

To Be Successful In This Role, You Will Demonstrate nn
- Detailed knowledge of, or the ability to quickly acquire, knowledge of the Working with Children Check Act 2000.

- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to identify patterns, assess risk and formulate evidence-based conclusions.

- Experience interpreting legislation, legal documents, policies or complex regulatory frameworks.

- Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports, recommendations and legal-style documents.

- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities within established timeframes.

- Sound decision-making skills and the ability to apply policy, legislation and precedent to complex matters.
