The Opportunity

Mission Data (MD) Division within ASD is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements.

The Data Manager is responsible to perform complex data management and administration work of Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) data systems. They will exercise a considerable degree of independence and will perform a leadership function. They will maintain a well-developed understanding of ASD’s mission and policy requirements and will exercise sound decision making and judgement in providing expert advice.

They will be required to actively manage key stakeholder relationships and identify stakeholder expectations and concerns. They will develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.

The Data Manager will have in-depth knowledge of data management functions and will be responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and administration of complex projects that impact on operational outcomes. They will identify and advocate for initiatives to maintain and improve data quality, integrity and availability.

An ASD 5 & 6 Data Officer is responsible for the management and the day-to-day operations of Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) data systems ensuring accuracy, quality and compliance with policy. They will maintain a well-developed understanding of ASD’s mission and policy requirements. They will undertake research and perform data management functions to achieve results.

They will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond, and collaborate on issues to achieve desired outcomes.

A Data Officer will use programming languages and tools in their day to day work to manage data and information.



They will analyse information structures and ensure that data is appropriately stored and archived, in line with relevant compliance considerations.

Key Duties

ASD EL 1

- Exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role.
- Have sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice.
- Responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that function.
- Engage in complex to very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for the Australian Signals Directorate.
- Accountable to plan, lead and manage a range of human and physical resources and exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes.
- Manage one or more teams.
- Develop and implement work plans, set performance indicators, and review individual, team and business performance, focusing on identifying opportunities for building team capability and continuous improvement.
- Ensure the work aligns with the strategic objectives and communicate expected outcomes.
- Responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes.

ASD5

- Accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility
- Interpret and provide advice within the data function area based on legislation, policy and procedures.




- Coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.
- May be a team coach or supervise a team

- Expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit.

ASD6

- Work independently with the chance for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work.
- Exercise both initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.
- Provide detailed data management and administration technical, professional and policy advice in relation to complex work and may contribute to strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

- Be accountable to set work priorities and manage workflows.
- Expected to be capable of building team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit.
