The Chance The EL1 Assistant Director role sits within the grants management team of the Family Law Services Section and is responsible for the effective administration and oversight of Commonwealth-funded family law services, particularly the Family Relationships Services Program. The role involves co-leading a sub-team, working across a large and diverse grant portfolio and requires an ability to convert program strategy to action, support ongoing reform to achieve program improvements, and ensure the best outcomes for program users.
Staff of the team demonstrate sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to balance compliance requirements with policy intent and service delivery realities. The work involves periods of reporting and assessment activity, followed by periods of stakeholder engagement and strategic project work.
Key functions of the role include:
- managing, guiding and monitoring staff reviewing and assessing performance reporting to determine compliance with grant agreements and program requirements
- financial management of a large grants program (over $250m/annum)
- advising on financial decisions in accordance with established procedures
- stakeholder engagement and management
- building team capacity and expertise in managing grants
- contributing to policy, reform, and project work, including program improvements.
The role works collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external service providers and contributes to a supportive team environment that values learning, consistency, and continuous improvement.
How you can help us make a difference
We are seeking applicants with the following skills and experience to support the effective administration of Commonwealth-funded family law services within a grants management environment:
- Experience in grants management, contract management, program delivery, or a related regulatory or assurance role
- Experience leading and developing a team, including remote team members
- Ability to interpret and apply grant agreements, guidelines, and policy frameworks, and assess compliance with grant requirements to ensure the department complies with its obligations
- Experience identifying and engaging with risk, and addressing issues that may arise
- Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear advice and recommendations
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders and external service providers to resolve issues and support program objectives
- Capacity to manage cyclical workloads and competing priorities.
To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department applicants must be Australian citizens.
Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.
Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created from this process, and will be active for 18 months after the date of this gazettal.
