The Assistant Director, Treasury plays a key leadership role in delivering the department’s treasury functions within a complex financial environment.

Reporting to the Director, Financial Reporting and Treasury, the role is responsible for overseeing day-to-day treasury operations while ensuring the integrity, accuracy and timeliness of financial transactions. The position exercises sound judgement by applying the Commonwealth financial framework and provides expert advice to support decision-making.

The role also contributes to strengthening financial management practices, driving continuous improvement initiatives, and supporting the Director in delivering strategic treasury outcomes.

In this role, your responsibilities will include the following:

- Supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the Treasury unit.
- Managing the department’s appropriation management function, including the daily appropriation drawdowns, cash forecasting and banking.
- Manage monthly reconciliations, clearing accounts, undertake monthly review of relevant general ledger accounts.
- Provide high level specialist advice to the wider Departmental network on treasury, revenue, tax, receipting and reconciliation issues.
- Promote the continuous improvement of team processes and ensure they are compliant with relevant legislation and Government policies.
- Identify system improvements within the unit and liaise with the systems area to assist in implementation of system enhancements.
- Contributing to the department’s annual financial statements, including preparation of the high quality and comprehensive appropriation reconciliations and workpapers.




- Maintaining skilled working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the Department of Finance and the Australian National Audit Office.
- Provide high-quality advice to the Director and stakeholders on treasury matters, financial risks and operational issues.
- Lead and coordinate process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, internal controls and compliance outcomes.
- Maintain oversight of treasury systems and processes (e.g. CBMS, RBANet, SAP or similar FMIS), including identifying opportunities for optimisation.
- Ensure accurate and timely management of Treasury communications, including shared mailboxes and stakeholder enquiries.
- Develop and maintain clear, fit-for-purpose process documentation and operational guidance
- Build and sustain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, influencing outcomes where required.

Eligibility

Employment at the Department of Education is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

- Citizenship: Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the APS unless the Agency delegate has agreed, in writing.
- Security Clearance: This is a designated security assessed position.



The successful candidate will have the ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance.
