About us The Derwent Estuary Program (DEP) is a not-for-profit scientific partnership between industry, state, and local government with the purpose of restoring and promoting the Derwent Estuary in Hobart. We have been monitoring water quality and improving the environmental condition of the Estuary since 1999.

About you

We are looking for someone who enjoys working with multiple stakeholders, has experience and a passion for managing habitat and species projects, including dealing with monitoring and data. Sharing our science is an important part of the DEP so an ability to communicate complex messages to a range of audiences will be another valuable attribute of the Biodiversity Officer.

Skills and Experience

Key Duties

- Coordinate/manage biodiversity conservation projects and support delivery of DEP's biodiversity program.
- Develop communication and engagement materials, including reports, newsletters, website and social media content and help support DEP communication stakeholder group.
- Build and maintain relationships with project partners, stakeholders and funding bodies.




- Facilitate meetings, workshops, field visits and community engagement activities.
- Manage volunteer wildlife monitors.
- Prepare grant applications, project reports and other documentation.
- Manage biodiversity data and support environmental monitoring activities.
- Provide technical input on biodiversity matters, including development referrals where required.
- Represent DEP at meetings, forums and community events.
- Undertake fieldwork, including boat-based activities, and other duties as required.

These activities to be undertaken in consultation with the CEO, other staff and partners.

Selection criteria

1. Relevant qualifications in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management or a related field, or equivalent experience.
2. Experience in biodiverity monitoring and data analysis.
3. Experience coordinating and delivering environmental projects, including planning, stakeholder engagement, reporting and evaluation.
4. Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, government, community, research and industry stakeholders.
5. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information to diverse audiences including preparation of reports, grant applications, website content, public presentations.
6. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
7. Current driver's licence.
