About the role

Empower Living Pty Ltd is seeking a qualified and compassionate Complex Mental Health Support Worker to join our Canberra team. Applications are welcome from all suitably qualified candidates who hold valid Australian working rights and a relevant mental health or community services qualification recognised in Australia.

In this role, you will provide specialised, person-centred support to NDIS participants living with psychosocial disabilities and complex mental health needs. You will support participants to manage daily challenges, strengthen their independence and participate meaningfully in their community.

What you’ll be doing

- Providing individualised support to participants with complex mental health needs
- Supporting daily routines, household tasks, appointments and community access
- Following individual support plans, risk assessments and behaviour support plans
- Supporting participants to develop coping strategies and emotional regulation skills
- Recognising changes in a participant’s mental health and escalating concerns appropriately
- Responding calmly and sensitively during challenging situations or periods of distress
- Promoting participant choice, independence, dignity and community participation
- Supporting participants to work towards their NDIS goals
- Maintaining accurate shift notes, incident reports and other required documentation
- Working collaboratively with families, carers, Care Managers, clinicians and other service providers
- Maintaining skilled boundaries, privacy and confidentiality

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a recognised qualification in Mental Health, Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, Counselling, Community Services, Disability Support or a related field.

Relevant qualifications may include

- Certificate IV in Mental Health
- Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work
- Diploma of Mental Health
- Diploma of Community Services




- Certificate III or IV in Individual Support or Disability, together with demonstrated complex mental health experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, Nursing, Occupational Therapy or another relevant human services field

Qualifications obtained in Australia or New Zealand are welcomed. Qualifications obtained in other countries will also be considered where the applicant can provide evidence that the qualification is recognised as equivalent to an Australian qualification.

- Understanding of trauma-informed, person-centred and recovery-oriented practice
- Ability to build trust and positive relationships with participants
- Calm, patient and non-judgmental approach
- Ability to respond professionally to complex or challenging situations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to complete accurate and objective documentation
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
- Commitment to professional boundaries, confidentiality and duty of care
- Valid Australian working rights

Essential requirements

- Current NDIS Worker Screening clearance, or willingness to obtain
- Current ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, or willingness to obtain
- Current National Police Check
- Current First Aid and CPR certificates, or willingness to obtain




- NDIS Worker Orientation Module certificate
- Current Australian driver’s licence
- Reliable vehicle with current registration and comprehensive insurance
- Ability to travel within the Canberra region

- Medication Management training
- Manual Handling training
- Experience supporting participants with trauma, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, personality disorders or complex behaviours
- Experience working in Supported Independent Living
- Availability for evening, weekend, active-night or sleepover shifts
