The Roles The Town is seeking a motivated individual to join the Regulatory Services Branch as either a Compliance Officer or Senior Compliance Officer.
The role is responsible for promoting and enforcing compliance with relevant legislation, Local Laws and Council policies. Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders, regulatory teams and senior management, you will contribute to the delivery of consistent, timely and effective building, environmental and development compliance functions. The role also involves building positive relationships with a broad range of external stakeholders, including residents, ratepayers, builders, developers, contractors, community groups, government agencies and legal representatives.

Key Responsibilities
- Policing and enforcement of legislation, Local Laws, Council Policies and programs relating to building, development and environmental compliance, including investigations, applications, customer complaints, preparation of correspondence and enforcement action, including the issuance of Warnings, Notices, Orders, Direction, Infringement Notices.
- Assessment, management and completion of applications received, from a compliance and environmental enforcement perspective, identifying potential compliance risks and making recommendations to support informed decision-making and adherence to relevant legislation, Local Laws, Council Policies, approval requirements and procedures,
in an efficient and timely manner.
- Ensuring legislation, Local Laws, policies and programs are efficiently and effectively administered and resolved in a timely, fair, equitable and transparent manner.
- Participate in practical and educational campaigns to increase community awareness related to compliance requirements.
Selection Criteria: Compliance Officer
- As a minimum, Certificate IV in Local Government or Diploma of Local Government (Regulatory Services) is essential. Tertiary qualifications in planning, law, science or environmental management, or experience in one of these fields, is highly desirable.
- Previous experience in a regulatory/compliance services and customer service role, with proven high-quality results in a demanding and dynamic work setting. Knowledge of building, planning, and swimming pools is desirable.
- Demonstrated experience of investigative processes and the ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, Local Laws, and Council Policies in a regulatory environment.
- Proficient organisational and time management skills including the ability to prioritise work and meet expected timeframes.
- Proficient written and verbal communications skills which support negotiation, influencing, and problem-solving skills with a range of stakeholders to deliver compliant and sustainable outcomes.
Selection Criteria: Senior Compliance Officer
- Sound experience in an investigatory, compliance, environmental protection, and/or regulatory enforcement role with demonstrated experience in the interpretation and administration of legislation, local laws, and policies relevant to the Position Objective.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex investigations,
including evidentiary requirements, and court proceedings.
- Leadership and team building skills to mentor and develop high-level customer service and performance outcomes of staff.
- Sound organisational and time management skills including the ability to prioritise work and meet expected timeframes.
- Sound written and verbal communications skills which support negotiation, influencing, and problem-solving skills with a range of stakeholders to deliver compliant and sustainable outcomes.
- As a minimum, Certificate 4 in Local Government or Diploma of Local Government (Regulatory Services) is essential. Tertiary qualifications in planning, law, science or environmental management, or experience in one of these fields, is highly desirable.
- Experience in traffic and construction management, particularly the review of Management Plans is desirable.
Eligibility
- Australian working rights.
- Current WA ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence.
- National Police Clearance (No older than 3 months).
