About the Role
We are seeking a warm, organised Medical Secretary to join our colorectal and general surgical practice in Nowra. We welcome applicants with experience in medical administration, including general practice, physician practices or other non-surgical specialties, as well as candidates with strong customer service and administrative backgrounds. Previous specialist or surgical practice experience is valued but is not essential. Full training will be provided (if required), therefore, experience is valued but not essential.
Many of our patients come to us at a time when they are feeling worried about their health. The person in this role is often the first voice they hear and the first face they meet. For that reason, we’re looking for someone who is friendly, compassionate and genuinely enjoys helping people.
This is an chance to work closely with a single specialist in a professional, respectful and supportive environment where patient care is always the priority.
Responsibilities
- Answering patient enquiries by phone, managing consultations
- Booking and managing appointments
- Following up referrals, investigations and test results
- Billing and receipting
- Preparing correspondence and maintaining records
- Liaising with GPs, hospitals and other healthcare providers
- Managing surgical bookings and patient coordination
The practice is based in Nowra, with consulting in Milton once per fortnight. Ideally, the successful applicant will be willing to travel to Milton on those days.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work from home on non-consulting days, providing flexibility and work-life balance.

Previous medical administration experience will be highly regarded, however we are open to candidates with transferable skills and the right attitude.
Experience with surgical billing is not required.
An understanding of surgical bookings would be helpful but is not essential, as training can be provided.

Week 1
Monday 8:00am till 5:00pm at Milton (working hours inclusive of being paid for your travel time)
Tuesday 8:00am till 4:30pm – WFH
Wednesday 8:00am till 4:30pm – WFH
Thursday 8:00am till 4:30pm – WFH
Week 2
Monday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Tuesday 8:00am till 4:30pm (Nowra)
Wednesday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Thursday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Week 3
Monday 8:00am till 5:00pm at Milton (working hours are 9:00am till 4:00pm) balance of time will be paid travel time)
Tuesday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Wednesday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Thursday 8:00am till :30pm (WFH or Nowra)
Week 4
Monday 8:00am till 12:30pm (Nowra) 1:30am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Tuesday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Wednesday 8:00am till 4:30pm (WFH)
Thursday 8:00am till 4:30pm (Nowra)
The above hours are inclusive of 30 minutes unpaid lunch break. As the practice expands, we envisage more on‑site presence (Nowra and Milton) will be required. This could expand to fully onsite or predominantly onsite and some WFH depending on practice needs.
Pay Rate:
$33 – $40.00 per hour plus super (dependent on skillset and experience)
Please note, the hourly rate for the successful candidate will be contingent upon factors such as relevant experience, required upskilling and any necessary training. The listed rate is intended as a general guide and may be adjusted in accordance with these criteria.
